Probably with Silverwhistle in mind, Warner Brothers announced a June 26th North American release of their Cult Classics Vol 4 Historical Series DVD set (which offers individual titles, as well). No kidding. "Historical". Their word. Not mine - NEVER mine...
The Colossus of Rhodes (1960, with Rory Calhoun) The Prodigal (1955, with Lana Turner) Land of the Pharaohs (1955, with Jack Hawkins) Maybe I should have spelled "historical" with its likelier correct title of "h y s t e r i c a l", but I'll let Silver be the last word in Warner's firm commitment to honesty, integrity and historical accuracy. (cough cough, choke choke) As for the first three volumes? Oh, Harley's gonna love some of these. I'm looking forward to at least a couple, myself. Cult Camp Classics: Volume 1 - Sci Fi Thrillers Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman (1958, with Allison Hayes) FINALLY! The Giant Behemoth (1959, with Gene Evans) FINALLY! Queen of Outer Space (1958, with Zsa Zsa Gabor) (oh please no... let's have more comparisons between Benny Hill and Will Hay, OK?) Cult Camp Classics: Volume 2 - Women in Peril The Big Cube (1969, with Lana Turner) Caged (1950, with Eleanor Parker) Trog (1970, with Joan Crawford; who said Joan Crawford died in 1968 - or was it that she wished she'd died? Oh well...) Cult Camp Classics: Volume 3 - Terrorized Travelers Hot Rods to Hell (1967, with Dana Andrews) about 10-15 years past its prime... Skyjacked (1972, with Charlton Heston) Zero Hour! (1957, with Dana Andrews) With any luck, the Atlantic storms will prevent at least the historical series from infecting the rest of the Western World. For the others, you can always PM me. ha ha |

Some really good stuff there. The Big Cube is one of those films I've always wanted to see, while Zero Hour is famous as being the original source of the plot for Airplane! The Colossus of Rhodes is the biggie for me, being Sergio Leone's first credited film as director- he took over direction on The Last Days of Pompei when Mario Bonnard became ill, but was uncredited.
Cult Camp Classics: Volume 1 could have been compiled specifically with my (lack of) tastes in mind. |
