I am not a fan of Stewart, and am unfamiliar with these. If any of these are favorites, can someone comment on them? The recent release of the two PRISONER OF ZENDAs (Ronald Colman's 1937 and Granger's 1952) didn't make me see Stewart in any different light.

I'd certainly recommend Waterloo Road, as that is a great John Mills film. Another favourite is Captain Boycott; it has a real treasury of great character actors - Mervyn Johns (against type), Noel Purcell, Cecil Parker, Alastair Sim, Niall MacGinnis, Maurice Denham, and Robert Donat. Watch out for a young Desmond Llewelyn on the train (I did forward this to IMDB but it hasn't been accepted).

As for the others, I've never seen them but will be looking forward to seeing them soon.

I'm not a fan either (I can't stand him!), nevertheless there are some wonderful films here. For Gainborough at their most preposterously charming I recommend Madonna of the Seven Moons, Fanny by Gaslight and Love Story. Any film featuring Margaret Lockwood as a terminally ill concert pianist playing a last concert at the open air theatre at Land's End (The Cornish Rhapsody) has something special going for it. Throw in Patricia Roc as the other love interest and it can't fail.

N.B. I never said it was a'great film'!

Why not add THE MAN IN GREY and SARABAND FOR DEAD LOVERS and then you would have all his pre hollywood star vehicles.

Good point but those two are already available on DVD. Mind you, so is Waterloo Road.

Do you know if they'll be issuing them individually, too?

Caravan is a wonderfully daft film. Anne Crawford is a liabilty, but Jean Kent, while somehat over the top, is great fun (she also adds a lot of sparkle to Waterloo Road). A bonus is Robert Helpman & Dennis Price, both as camp as the coffee.

I can't stand Granger, his ego is so obvious in all his films. But any collection that contains 5 films with the wonderful Jean Kent has to be worth getting.

And it has the least flamenco-like flamenco ever put on film!

If you ever find a copy of Michael Powell's Luna de miel (1959) [aka Honeymoon], that's got a wonderful flamenco in it by Antonio and Carmen Rojas. Talk about a vertical expression of a horizontal desire, it's the sexiest dancing I've ever seen on screen. Even though Antonio was as camp as a row of tents :

Carmen and Rosita Segovia were the leading ladies in Antonio's dance troupe which toured the world at about that time. They did flamenco, ballet and some interesting mixtures of the two styles

I would love a copy of this! I have been promised it by P&P-ers, (ditto Oh Rosalinda!) but no-one has ever got around to it.

I have DVDs of the various Antonio Gades flamenco ballets - El Amor Brujo, Bodas de Sangre, Carmen, & c.

Love the theme tune to this film. I believe it was originally recorded by Italian singer Marino Marini

Does anyone agree with me that the climactic fight between Granger and Mills is slightly ridiculous.Mills looks like he is about 10 stone and Granger around 14 stone and 6 inches taller yet Mills knocks Granger all over the place till Grangers dodgy heart gives out on him allowing Mills to deliver the ko.It looks absurd.

Received this today. Sampling various discs it looks pretty well restored. Caesar and Cleopatra's colour not in the Adventures of Robin Hood league but fine neverthethless. Auric's score sounds wonderful. Care has been put into this set from what I've tasted so far.

Now for a similar James Mason set please!
