If you like 1930s operetta-ish romances, you'll enjoy it. If you want tense comedy-thrillers, you may be disappointed...
Does anyone know why this has never had a British release?
Its wonderful, I got my copy a year or two ago from Amazon France. The DVD has dual audio but the print used is from the BFI copy so is excellent quality and has the extra 10 minutes of footage missing from the French version so if you watch with the audio in French you have a gap or silent period.
It was once the hardest Hitchcock film to obtain!
Can't be worse than The Magic Bow I suppose.

It's hard to choose between them as they're both awesome but The Magic Bow wins for having Cecil Parker be Italian and Dennis Price be, well Dennis Price.
Of course, if you're looking for historical accuracy, you may be disappointed![]()
Saw this once years ago at the NFT. A much maligned film but actually rather charming and entertaining. Hitchcock may have disliked it but we don't have to!

You cannot be serious.
OK, The Magic Bow wasn't the worst film ever - just very lacking to my mind.
Quite serious - I love Gainsborough costume dramas and this is a cracker. With Stewart Granger, Dennis Price, Cecil Parker, Felix Aylmer, Phyllis Calvert and Jean Kent how can it be anything other than awesome?

Any film where Dennis Price bests Stewart Granger in a duel is marvellous.

I agree! But it is, I was fairly disappointed, even having read reviews before watching.
I'd still rather watch it than plenty of other films, mind you.![]()

Oh it most definitely can......
I'm a fan of Esmond, Jessie and Alfred, but in the months after buying the disc I had three goes at watching it. I've not got to the half-hour mark yet.![]()

I hadn't made that connection, interesting.....![]()
Given we've just come back from Vienna, with its 'lovely' aroma of horses, I really should get around to watching this rather than just notice it sitting on my 'yet to watch' DVD shelf.
I know Hitchcock didn't rate this, and Paul Merton rather dismissed it in his recent BBC4 programme, but it has Jessie Matthews so it can't be all bad. Maybe I should move it up my viewing priority list!
Is Amazon.fr the only place you can buy it?
According to Hitchcock Wiki, the French edition is the only legit release though there's probably other French sites that sell it. It's quite cheap from Amazon.fr though (and you get Downhill thrown in)
