Default Amazing DVD News!

from DVD Drive-In:

Quote:
We just got word that Fox has a slew of classic horror DVDs which will be released on September 11 as part of their Halloween promotion. These include double feature sets of TALES FROM THE CRYPT (1972)/VAULT OF HORROR (1973), CHOSEN SURVIVORS/THE EARTH DIES SCREAMING (directed by Terence Fisher), DEVILS OF DARKNESS/WITCHCRAFT (1964, starring Lon Chaney Jr.), BLUEPRINT FOR MURDER/MAN IN THE ATTIC and THE FLY CLASSIC COLLECTION (SRP $39.99) which will feature re-releases of the original THE FLY and RETURN OF THE FLY, as well as the home video premiere of CURSE OF THE FLY. Many of the titles here have never been available on home video in the U.S. before! The double features will retail for around $14.98 each, but will probably sell in stores or online for less. More details and cover art to follow…
and...

There’s more good news regarding MGM’s long awaited September 11 DVD release of WITCHFINDER GENERAL (aka THE CONQUEROR WORM). Producer Philip Waddilove has confirmed to DVD Drive-In that the movie will not only be presented as Michael Reeves’ director cut, but will also contain the original music score by Paul Ferris which was removed from all previous home video versions in the U.S. For this DVD, Waddilove has also just recorded an audio commentary along with star Ian Ogilvy, and an additional supplement will be a collection of Waddilove's personal stills, taken on the set. Looks like it’s going to be one hell of a release!

That's great news about EARTH DIES SCREAMING. Maybe I can live in peace, after all!.

But CURSE OF THE FLY? Whoever heard of this one? And why didn't someone tell me I needed that one to complete my Fly collection? (I don't even know why I let that husband of mine run loose sometimes... he claims he's never even SEEN it!! Obviously, I need to check out Brian Donlevy's last decade of films to see how many more Must Have's are in there!)

Default Witchfinder General

It would be great if someone (Criterion?) would put together the definitive Witchfinder General DVD release, with all variants included (i.e., both UK and US versions, cut and uncut, accompanied by all soundtrack options). For UK viewers, the US soundtrack, though not authentically Reeves', is still of interest, especially given the addition of Price's Poe reading at the start to locate it in the tradition of the Corman/Price series.

It's also about time someone did a decent, comprehensive documentary on Reeves. Outside of Pete Tombs' Channel 4 'Eurotica' entry (which was great) nothing seems to exist...

That would be rather complicated e.g.

original cut UK version
US release cinema version
US home video version (with dubbed music)
euro version with topless shots
UK restored version
US restored version
etc

I have a copy off UK cable (HVC) as well that cuts to the credits just before the witch is hung at the opening, not sure where that came from...
