Anamorphic or not, the DVD looks fine on both my 4:3 and 16:9 TVs. A real period piece - well acted for the most part, and astonishingly well directed given that it was Michael Winner in the chair....

Nothing astonishing about that ..... Michael Winner was a really good director and made some fine films, mainly in the 60s and early 70s.

I'm racking my brains to think of them - surely not the "Cool Trilogy" ('Some Like It Cool' (1961), 'Play It Cool' (1962) and 'The Cool Mikado' (1963) - from nudie flicks to bastardised G&S via poor old Billy Fury)? Or anything from 'The Nightcomers' (1971) onwards? Which doesn't leave that much - though I'm happy to be enlightened....

(Also, some of us find it difficult to forgive his support for La Thatcher. Or the restaurant reviews. Or the TV ads....)

I'd love a DVD of "You Must Be Joking!" & "The Jokers". Anchor Bay was going to realese "The Jokers", & I think Michael Winner had even recorded a commentary for it (his commentary on the "I'll Never Forget What's 'Isname" DVD is just great), but I think they were skuppered by some music right issue.

name='earlb']In that case I apologise Alan. I was brought up on 35m/m - 70 m/m and Todd A-O. I was used to using Scope lenses (usually made by Bausch and Lomb) to squeeze the picture. That was many years ago (I am a dinosaur) and obviously things have changed.

I'm a dinosaur too! I'm in my last couple of years in this industary (started in 1966). I was working at Technicolor a year ago, & mostly what they send to the cinema these days is a hard drive, about the size & shape of a hard back book! What I can't understand is these days the org. neg. is scanned into HD & all the grading (& everything else) is all done HD, so the picture at the cinema should look fantastic, but most new films look awful to me. But that's a debate for another forum.
