    "Prepare yourselves, gentlemen, for a new scale of scientific values...!"

    Great line, but I don't remember it in "The Tempest"

    Not to mention the first electronic music soundtrack, a first years before the electronic synthesizer was invented.

    Interesting piece from NPR archives here;

    It was years before the Moog synthesiser was created (1964) but electronic instruments like the Theramin (that the Barrons used here) had been used in Spellbound (1945). As had the Ondes Martenot which was used in films like The Red Shoes (1948). But their score is widely credited with being the first completely electronic film score.

    Didn't the BBC Radiophonic Workshop create a 'synthesiser' before Moog?

    Anybody any ideas as to why the 50th Anniversary DVD 2 disk edition of this classic, which was freely available at about £12.99 at the time of release, is now well over £54 on amazon and play etc etc? Is there a world wide shortage or something?

    Hello Pricey

    You just have to come to France, it's sold at 13€ at FNAC shop, but in a single presentation......

    The reason is, amazingly, that it has gone out of print.

    Considering that it only came out a year or two back I find this staggering.

    I had it on order at Play since the summer but, having done some investigating and finding it's oop I cancelled a couple of days back.

    I'd like to think that it will get a re-release before too long, but who knows.

    The region 1 two disc version seems to be widely available at the normal price so why not get that?

    This is not so unusual. Many titles go out of print very quickly - if you can, buy titles as soon as they come out. Look at the prices now being asked for the dvd issues of classics like "An Inspector Calls" and "The Small Back Room" - and be warned!

    I think £12.99 was a rip off to start with, so cant see the point of paying more.

    Never be collectable in my book.

    [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Small-Back-Room-David-Farrar/dp/B0019X400I]The Small Back Room[/ame] from Criterion - $24.99 (£16.74)

    But the Studio Canal / Warner Home Video version (without any commentary or extras) is selling on UK Amazon marketplace for £45

    This habit of only doing a limited run of some titles and them selling out quickly is one reason why we set up the Powell and Pressburger email group so that we could let each other know when their films were released and so that we could dive in quickly and get a copy before they sold out

    It wasn't actually my idea to do it. I was volunteered because I knew the most about computers and the internet - when we set it up over 10 years ago. Back then there weren't many P&P films commercially available and they weren't often shown on TV or in the cinema, so we had to savour every release and every screening.

    Amazon has to be one of the last places to buy a rare film as they are well over priced. I have found with Amazon that most sellers who ask very high prices ,only have one copy and once gone will not be able to replace. But in its defence if you collect ,the chances are greater that it will be genuine.

    Ebay on the other hand is a minefield of sellers listing as private .Which hides repeat sales.
