Hi dont tempt me to get on my hate wagon about the Post Office/ Govenment I have just spent six months trying to stop them shoving un addressed tat through my letterbox, after filling in the forms ect they kept on doing it, in the end I wrote to them advising them that I would take them to court for littering my property !!! this soon produced some action and a letter of apology and at last it has stopped, but only for two years after that you have to start all over again

Have you signed up the the Mailing Preference Service? I found it has cut the junk mail quite a lot.

Although not as much as the Telephone Preference Service has stopped unwanted telephone calls. If anyone does phone me trying to sell me something I just ask if they use the TPS system. If they don't then they're a shady company and I wouldn't want to deal with them. If they say they do use it then I tell them that I'm on the list of people they shouldn't call and that by calling me they've just cost their company a £100 fine - which the company will probably take out of their commission. Not true, but it scares the shit out of them

Indeed - both very useful. Also helps to go x-dir. I'm getting a new number next week which will only be given to 5 people - be interesting to see if it ever gets anything unsolicited.

Almost the only problem we have with junk mail is that which is simply addressed to "The Occupier" - apparently, that escapes the MPS guidelines.

All the best

Has anyone had those calls from Las Vegas that go on for about five minutes and you cannot hang up? You put phone down and then pick it up again and they are still talking. I think what if I need to make emergency phone call, how do I terminate their call?

Going ex-directory won't escape some that just generate phone numbers at random and call them to see if that number's in use

It's the same with any call. If the caller doesn't hang up then you can't make outgoing calls. To make the three nines call you'd have to use another phone, a mobile or run to the nearest phone box

Doesn't just pulling the cable from the wall socket terminate the call?

I hope Clitheroe will change his Quicksilver avatar soon... if my hubby sees that as he's reading over my shoulder, he'll end up with a house full of long-haired guitar people meandering all over HAPPY TRAIL's songs. "Mona..." on and on, finally ending up with me playing Dale Evans in the final duet.

Oh please save me...

(Although I do like the fringe-laden blouses she wore...)

No more than hanging up on them, the line to you is still in use by their call - and it does make it difficult to make an outgoing call is the cable is unplugged

I'm XD and I once had a call from a market research company. When I asked her how she got my number, she told me that her boss had given her a number to call and she had been told to add one on at the end for the next and subsequent calls.
When I asked her if she realised that it was illegal to do that, she told me that she just did what she was told. That's Call Centres for you.
Since being XD, that is the only call I have had. However, if you give your number out to companies that you deal with - particularly on the Internet - and they have a policy of selling their clients' details, because you have actually provided your number, it is not covered by the TPS.
I always give my mobile number - because I only use it for texting. As I'm deaf, I can't hear a ruddy thing on it but, if I do try to take a call on it, it switches itself off which is really, really handy!

I'm tempted to buy cheapo Hitchcock and Classic Brit Films ( Night To Remember, Ryan's Daughter, Etc. ) DVD's from E-Bay, but I'm fairly convinced that they will be pirated copies shipped from the Orient.

Should I give a toss.............................. or pay through the nose in HMV ?

If they are not available in the UK go for it .... I have bought some excellent quality dvds from South Korea, mostly for about £2.
