Hi can anyone tell me if they have been charged for importing dvds from abroard Aus in this case, when I import tv spares anything over £18 is at risk of being charged an import duty !! sometimes they bother sometimes they dont, just wondered if anyone has had experience of this with dvds, the dvds would come to £27 many thanks den

The only time I have been charged for importing dvds is when I have bought from a US company called OLDIES.com. They do a good offer on orders for 5 dvds + but the boxes are so big that they incur a customs charge 'cos they often get opened by officials. Last time it cost me an extra £12.

I've bought several US DVDs through Amazon.com. The value is usually shown on the label and when I foolishly bought two together costing more than £18 I was charged an extra £8, I think. When I've ordered single DVDs valued at less than £18 there has been no problem.

I've quite often had things sent from the States (or elsewhere) when the value on the customs declaration is over the limit. But they don't always charge you. Sometimes they pass them through without inspecting them. The main part of the charge is a charge for inspecting the item. All that hard work in opening the parcel

I get stuff from the states all the time.Only one has an item been opened by customs and i think i was charged duty one one occasion many years ago

Only 18 Pounds? That's not very generous. It's much better in the other direction. We can import up to $900 (about 380 pounds) before an import duty is payable.

Believe me, I've thought of that! I routinely buy boxes of DVDs and CDs from Play and AmazonCO.UK, hundreds of dollars at a time maybe 3 or 5 times a year, and I've never paid anything extra. In fact, I usually get incredible price-savings.

The notion of unfair suffering brings ideas of subterfuge to mind.

The opening charge and the duty charges are entirely separate things. The opening charge goes straight to the Post Office ; this went up earlier this year by a measly 100% to the £8 mentioned.

So much gets through 'duty free' because the clearance depots are swamped. Technically, however, you are required to make a declaration of duty if you receive a parcel without being charged.

Once they realise that the tax revenues from smoking are diminishing post-ban, they'll be coming round to the forum members with search warrants....

There is talk of the £18 baseline being REDUCED.

yes I am afraid that what has been said previously is correct, most times I order goods from the states and make sure that it is below the measly £18 limit, but occassionally you have to buy a box set and I have had some of them clobbered, the latest casualty was a box set of Musicals value $40, this incurred a charge of £11.56 made up of a post office handling charge, V.A.T. and a customs charge, as usual every body wants to dip in your pocket with some trumped up excuse.

I ewither keep the order under £18 or take it well over (about £90) so that the additional costs are nearly outweighed by savings on postage.

Having made my post above i came home and found that i had a note from the Post Office asking me to cough up £13.15 for customs charges.I had ordered 5 quota quickies from a firm in the States.When i went to collect them i found that Customs had charged £5.15 in VAt and the rest was Post Office handling charges!Apparently this has risen from £4 to £8 in the last couple of months.Little wonder that they are in such dire striats with those sort of charges!
