Nigel Stock mentioned in an interview that he preferred Wilmer to Cushing in the role.

Cushing preferred Wilmer in the BBC series! Cushing was very unhappy with the way his series turned out (inc his own performance). He felt they were not given enough time to get it right and also felt that the scripts and some of the casting left much to be desired. I enjoy the Cushing episodes but the Wilmer ones are definitely superior, although Wilmer is quite critical of the production schedules on his own series.

Does anyone know whose voice it is that says over the opening "In late Victorian London lived many detectives who were the Rivals of Sherlock Holmes"?

In the first volume, I think perhaps the most enjoyable performance is that of Peter Vaughan as the dreadful Dorrington. He seems to be having a great time.
