Default A Warning To The Curious

Anyway know the location of the church in this M.R.James 'Ghost Story for Christmas'? It's where Peter Vaughan cycles to, looks at some gravestones and speaks to the vicar. It appears to be quite isolated and yet have magnificent views over the north Norfolk coastline. I've driven up and down here countless times, yet have never spotted where the church might be.

(Btw, I know other locations were Holkham Bay and Wells-next-the-sea.)

Default A Warning to the curious

A freind of mine on a vist to Norfolk came across quiet by accident the church featured in A Warning to the curious, he was doing some research about Phantom black dogs.He was filming certain known sites etc. He thought that the church and location looked like it was from the A Warning to the curious, it wasn't till he got back home and viewed his copy of the ghoststory that it was indeed the actual location. I forget where abouts in Norfolk he said it was, but I shall ask him as soon as I can.

Some time since I've seen this one. Could it be Happisburgh?. I think the rail scenes were filmed on the North Norfolk railway. I thought the village was Wells-next-the-sea.

Bingo! It is Happisburgh! Just consulted the Norfolk Churches Site and confirmed it. Now hopefully I can rest just a little more easily at night !

Cheers, monsterscud and kevinfl.

You had better go quickly Mr Bullfrog - because Happisburgh (pronounced Haze-borough, by the way) is rapidly slipping into the North Sea. It's a very weird place indeed, a sort of marginal place that has attracted a peculiar community - you know the sort, skulls hanging over doorframes, sinister dogs, rusting engines, tin shacks that rattle in the wind. There's also an amazing Arts and Craft mansion visible across the fields, a lighthouse, incredible coastal erosion and Britain's finest privately owned garden nearby, East Ruston Old Vicarage.

Sounds just my kinda town!

Actually I've driven through many times, but don't think I've ever stopped. Will rectify that within the next couple of weeks.

And yeah, the pronunciations are slightly odd in that corner aren't they? Isn't Stiffkey said as Stooky or something?

Happisburgh is in Norfolk. It's not really all that near anywhere, certainly not near anywhere anyone's heard of. It's one of those isolated East Anglian coastal communities, about half way between Cromer and King's Lynn.

Stiffkey is indeed pronounced Stookey ... and the villages of Costessey and Wymondham are said as Cossey and Wyndham respectively ... plus many more!

Have a look at these links about the infamous Rector of Stookey.

IMDb plot summary search

Bats.

ps - you might find this interesting too ...

Ha ha - I used to call my last dog (a large GSD) 'Shucky' for that very reason!

Another place well worth checking out in the area is the village of Little Walsingham. It can sometimes be like finding yourself in an episode of Father Ted!
