Anyone give me some advice on Black Park as kind of a day trip from London?
Is it easy to get to from south-east London (staying with a friend in Lewisham)? How big is it to walk around, and how likely am I to spot familiar locations armed just with my (rather good) memory of my favourite Hammer films? Are the most recognizable spots off the beaten track? |

Black Park's in my neck of the woods (sorry !) - and it's not that easy to get to unless you're in a car. The lake is the most identifiable feature - the rest is - well - pretty much like any other piece of woodland. If you're into Carry On Movies Windsor or Maidenhead have quite a few locations within walking distance of the station.
'Well, borrow one !' |

Norman Wisdom famously filmed ON THE BEAT in Windsor, although some of the streets have long since disappeared. Just a short walk up the Long Walk you're not far off from the houses used for Sid and Trevor's homes in BLESS THIS HOUSE (the film) and there are a fair few NEW AVENGERS bits in Windsor as well. And when you've walked your feet off, there are plenty of pubs and restaurants where you can sit, rest and browse through your digital snaps... The church grounds further up the street remain almost the same - these were used in the episode featuring Carol Drinkwater. Turk's Head Court - round the back of Eton High St. - is just about recognisable from the episode featuring Terence Rigby. Marker's base - in Atherton Court (also Esme Crowfoot's flat in Carry On Loving) - is almost unchanged. Some development work is starting to creep back into Eton (one big change from Marker's day is Tangier Lane - one of Frank's 'lurking' spots is long since gone) but thankfully most of the area is owned by the College and they keep a fairly tight rein on things. Sun Close - from the episode featuring Michael Pennington - has had bits added on, but the phone box which Marker uses as a vantage point is still there. The one near the Baldwin Institute, which he also used, went about 5 years ago. I THINK the big house which was used in the film THE GHOsT GOES GEAR was the one they used for the episode featuring James Bolam. LOL - I really ought to write the walker's Film Guide to Windsor & Eton... ![]() Smudge |
