If they really wanted to recapture the Victorian bath days they would also have to put more urine in the water.

Oh good, I'd heard the baths were being restored. They are beautiful.

As well as the more obvious scenes in LoM the location was also used for morgue scenes in the show (!).

Michael,

I used to live in Greenford but I don't remember any swimming pool there.
Indeed, for our school swimming lessons we were bussed to Longfield Hall in Ealing.
The Tesco in Greenford is on the site of the former Granada cinema.

Default Deep End: The True Location Of The Swimming Baths

I have it from the horse's mouth - from a friend who actually used to swim there - that the location for the swimming baths used by Skolimowski in DEEP END was the Cathall Road Baths in Leyton. They were knocked down shortly afterwards. There is apparantly a new(ish) swimming pool there now, with nothing like the old atmosphere.

Hi Kata,

Yes, I was only thinking this week while watching Life On Mars that the "morgue" appeared to have the same tile work.

The Victorian Baths must be raking the money in for location film shoots.

I lived in Greenford and Hanwell for 35+ years and don't remember a Granada cinema where Tescos currently are. The swimming pool is at Gurnell Grove on the Ruislip Road East, just after the old GWR bridge.

But I do remember my mum taking me to Lime Grove baths to watch the wrestling back in the 60's, Les Kellett, Mick MacManus, Steve Logan and so on, makes the WWE look like a bunch of poofs, joke.

Hi milord

I too lived in both Greenford and Hanwell, but have not yet gravitated to exotic climes!

Here's a link to confirm the location of the old Granada:

The Granada Cinema

It was approx 70-100 yards north of The Red Lion traffic lights on the left, and could be seen and accessed from an alley alongside Woolworths in The Broadway.

With regard to Gurnell Grove pool, it is not in Greenford, but rather in West Ealing, and as I recall is of quite recent construction (1970's?), and is still standing.

The Tesco store is in the old Cinema building, you can still see the outline of the name on the top of the brickwork. This store was one of the first self service stores in London. I saw the Rolling Stones there in the 60's when they also had concerts on there.

The old Granada was great for concerts.
Once saw Billy J. Kramer plus other big names, but Johnny Kidd and The Pirates closed the first half, and being both excellent and local, blew everyone else on the bill away.
Great days!

Do they hope to eventually reopen the baths for swimmers or will it be used like a museum?
I must say it is a creepy looking place.

Dave.

There must be several of those Victorian baths up and down the UK. that pic of the Manchester baths could have been took at the Chester swimming baths,(still open) they are exactly the same, as if built to a plan. The same way many Victorian schools are built exactly the same.
