Default 1969 Italian Job opening scene

I am trying to find out where exactly the opening scene of the 1969 Italian Job movie was shot. It's the scene with the guy in the Ferrari on a BEAUTIFUL mountain road. Inside a tunnel he crashes into a shovel and is killed.
Where is that road?
Anyone?

Thanks DB7! I always wondered where that was?

The Frejus Tunnel is on the border between Italy and France, on the road between Turin and Lyon - beautiful country.

Now all we need is a Matt Monro CD and sunglasses. wink

Now I know where to take my car out for a spin this summer! (by the way: I said Ferrari, but it's a Lamborghini Miura...)

PS: 'On days like these' IS available in mp3-form somewhere on the web

The book "The Making Of The Italian Job" describes this location as 'Old St. Bernard Road' in 'Old St. Bernard Valley'

Default The Italian Job...Location of Mafia Digger scene?

Does anyone know of the exact location of the scene where the digger pushes the 'so called' aston martin off the road?
I understand it took place on the Col de petit St-Bernard pass.... but was it on the french or italian side and whereabouts?
Thanks

Andy,
We had a previous chat about the opening at the Frejus Tunnel.

I'm thinking Italy.

It's on the Italian side. They filmed the Miura driving up the St. Bernard pass, then filmed it coming back down and used this as the border crossing footage. The Tunnel scene was filmed elsewhere between Courmayeur and La Thuile.

Or so I'm told.

The ( grand )st bernard pass was still closed due to snow at the beginning of last week anyway.....the scene I meant was not at the start of the film but when they were driving the DB7 and came accross the mafia? road block....I drove thru La Thuile to Courmayeur though...
I is going to order the film anyway...I take it its on dvd....looks like that book for my next trip to the alps too wink .
It was interesting to see a number of british registered Minis while driving over the petit bernard .... I understand its a popular pilgrimage for mini owners from here eek! :)

cheers for the pic db7

You should have passed through the tunnel then if it's where I'm led to believe it is.

It will look nothing like the film as the road has been widened and tunnel extended.

Yes, I know. It was just to note. Also, I thought it was on the same road.

Just don't try to drive you Mini into any moving vehicles!

LOL Gibbie....magnificent driving in the alps..the road wasn't the only place with skid marks!!

Quote "The first stop is the Col du Petit St Bernard, high in the Alps, our first homage at the scene of the supercar destruction derby unleashed on Caine and his cockney mob by the mafia. “Pretty car,” sings the mobster before flicking one of Caine’s Aston Martins off the side of the mountain with a digger. In reality, however, the car was only a dressed-up old Alfa." this is from http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/article/0...01619_3,00.html .
And I found the holidays quite amusing too : http://www.italianjob-tour.com/ .

Thks DB7....yep they were constructing a tunnel while I was there too but there are several original tunnels just out of La Thuile which are possible :)
Cheers
Andy
