Talking of pubs as locations ...

One of the (few) locations that we haven't identified yet in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943) is the pub/roadhouse seen near the start and end where the Army lorries pull up for a break so that Spud can meet "Johnnie" (Deborah Kerr).

It's called "The Bull" in the film but a name is easily changed. There is a London Transport stop for red buses seen just down the road as they leave so it's fairly close to London (although red buses went quite a way out of London then).

We suspect it was on the A4, Bath Road, just beyond Heathrow. But as Heathrow was only a tent and a grass runway in 1943 and the M25 & M4 have been built there since then I don't hold out too much hope of finding it to be still there.

But did anyone know that area in the 1940s or 50s (or before then) and know a pub/roadhouse on the Bath Road? Or does anyone have any other info that could help?

Steve

Steve,

After checking the website
www.beerintheevening.com/pubs
it appears that the only current pub in that area on Bath Road is The Tabard,Turnham Green,2 Bath Road,Chiswick.
There is a picture on the website.

Thanks Dave but that's not it. It's probably out nearer to (or even a bit beyond) the M25. We really need someone who knew that area in the early 1940s.

That's a useful web site though

DOES ANYONE KNOW OF ANY PUBS ESPECIALLY THOSE THAT MAY NOW SELL GOOD REAL ALES THAT HAVE BEEN FEATURED IN FILMS ESPECIALLY OVER THE LAST FIFTY YEARS WITHIN THE UK. THIS COMBINES TWO OF MY HOBBIES AND I MAY DO A TOUR IF I CAN FIND ENOUGH STILL STANDING. DOES ANYBODY KNOW THE NAME OF THE PUB IN A KIND OF LOVING WHERE ALAN BATES SINGS ON STAGE WHILE GETTING DRUNK WITH JACK SMETHURST.

Yeah, you can try the "Nell of Old London" pub, Catherine Street, Covent Garden, London. That was in Frenzy, i was there a while back, looks the same today as it did in 1972.

Not a film location but of intrest to anyone intrested in the soaps. Emmerdale was shot over its length in many locations and even the village has changed over the time the show was on air. The local pub has always remained the Woolpack, however its external facard has changed with film locations. In the begining it was the Falcon Inn, Arncliffe in Littondale and later The Commercial Inn, Esholt just out side of Bradford. I can recommend the Commercial Inn as I have visited it when I lived in Bradford, any way full details at -

http://www.yorkshire-dales.com/emmerdale.html

and follow Allan Turnbulls Emmerdale Page. The interior shot were a sound set, sorry but the beer was nice.

It is cruel to discover one's mediocrity only when it is too late.

Thanks for the sites for film locations. Much appreciated, Charles. It's great fun locating them.

Best,
