The Wicked Lady is still there on the B651 Wheathampstead Road and is actually named after the ghost of an alleged female highway robber said to haunt nearby Nomansland Common. I think her name was Lady Ferrers and she is said to have taken to highway robbery after falling on hard times.

I was drinking at the Tan Hill several years ago and I did notice the pentacle painted in red on the wall. Looking around at the 'locals' I did get a slight shiver, but to be perfectly honest - I assumed it was there as an 'in joke'.

Is there any proof filming of Werewolf took place there?

What fcuker said that?

I'm a big fan of Prospects (Channel 4, 1984 series) Southend pub scene (camping episode) was at the Shore House, Thorpe Bay. It's a Beefeather or a Hungry Horse these days.

Withnail's pub scene (they called it KingHenry) was not in Penrith, but a village called Stony Stratford, well within the Bucks, Herts inclusion zone for daytime location filming, and no hotels needed for cast and crew. That's where the tea shop is too. "I demand the finest wines..."

Pub scenes in the Sweeney were filmed in a boozer called the Red Cow in Hammersmith west Lundaan. ACDC played their first London gig there. The Stranglers were always playingthere, and Sex Pistols were in the crowd to see how it was done. Pub's gone now, but if anyone's over that way, I have it on good authority it's on the spot where Latymers pub has existed since c1993.

What fcuker said that?

The Mother Black Cap - site of the famous "What f**ker said that?" scene in Withnail & I really does exist.

It used to be called something else, but it was refurbished last year and is now called The Mother Black Cap.

That's right. This ain't the Camden one - this is the REAL one, ie. "I FUCK ARSES" scratched in the bogs... pub, and "PERFUMED PONSE!" It was Bar Booshka when I was there 5 years ago. Now it's got it's proper name I think, in keeping with its Withnail hereditary!

Incidentally it was Bar Booshka when Ralph Brown was interviewed upstairs for the DVD extras!

Regarding "American Werewolf in London":The Moors were filmed around the Black Mountains in Wales, and East Proctor is in reality the tiny village of Crickadarn about six miles southeast of Builth Wells off the A479. The exterior of The Slaughtered Lamb was a residential cottage dressed up to look like a pub for the movie, the interior, where Lila Kaye tends bar and a frightened Rik Mayall plays chess is in Surrey. Its the Black Swan, Old Lane at the junction with Ockham Lane in Martyr's Green about a mile northwest of Effingham JUnction by rail. (between Guildford and Leatherhead) As far as I know there was no filming on the real Yorkshire Moors, so the Tan Inn is possibly simply cashing in on the films supposed locale to encourage the visitors. As you say, an "Inn Joke"....

Interior of "The Crown" at Penn, Buckinghamshire was used in that awful film "The Saint" starring Val Kilmer.

Question Pub scenes in films

hello everyone. I'm researching a book about pubs, and wondered if anyone has a favourite pub scene from British cinema? Not so much about the locations, as the spirit /humour/ timelessness of the scene. Anything from war films, Passport To Pimlico onwards, any suggestions?

Hi Cornelius,
Quite a few in Get Carter (1971). Two women having a lively old cat fight, a funeral group where a man gets a pint thrown in his face, Michael carter asking for a drink "in a straight" glass etc.....

Well I guess the ultimate pub scene would be the muder in the film `The Krays` in `The blind beggar` that would certainly be something to write about.

Thats if you wanna bring true history into your research of course.

Lot's of The Quare Fellow (1962) takes place in pubs, albeit they are in Dublin. But a pub's a pub.

Sylvia was less glam than she was in the pub in Alexandria.........

This is an interesting thread.

How about the pub scene in `Educating Rita` where Rita sits with her family and they are having a good old sing song. Rita however, by the look on her face, realises she wants more out of life than that?

"American Werewolf in London" has an interesting pub scene shot in a real pub! And still with the genre of comedy horror "Sean Of the Dead" features a real pub at the centre of the action.
