Default Heavens Above!

Would anyone know the location of the church (pictured above) and village featured in the Peter Sellers film 'Heavens Above!' (1963)?
The front of the church looks a little like a studio mock-up but it could be real.
The film was made at Shepperton studios, Surrey so I would imagine the location would be nearby.

Dave.

It's certainly an unusual looking Church (no Spire, but may have been damaged and removed during the War)........part of me says it's a studio mock-up though, the Gravestones are too clean, and the other street-furniture (phone box, horse trough, memorial) looks all a bit to coveniently placed to me!

On looking at that photo,Im 100% convinced that is a studio backlot set. It does not look real at all. Shepperton is famous for its large sets, think "Oliver" etc. By those standards this is quite a modest set but I reckon it is one, and those houses on the left look smaller than reality to give a forced distance perspective.

On second looks I reckon you're right Christoph!........the Ledging of the Church above the Telephone Kiosk is wonky!

Some are built with a tower instead of a spire. But that does look like a studio set. The openings on the tower are too big and open. In real life they'd be at least covered with some sort of louvred shutters or glazed. And the clock looks to be painted on.

As Mark said, the street & street furniture looks too clean and convenient.

Believe it or not I recognise some of the trees having looked at a lot of Shepperton backlot shots recently - this is 100% Shepperton backlot - where the mine workings were in 2150AD.

Are the houses seen under the trees and at the back of the church also mock-ups?

Cheers

Dave.

There are houses there now (and on top of the church) - but there were none then. They are all small scale dressing. This was just an open patch of roughly triangular ground with trees along one long side, the reservoir bank along another and the studio buildings on the other.

It's definitely Shepperton railway station near the start.
