Default The Shining

[quote=batman;161173]A colleague has asked this question ...

Were the interiors of the hotel in [b]The Shining[/B....

The interiors for " The Shining" were filmed at what is now Elstree Film Studios but what was then in the 1970s EMI Film Studios taking up most of the main sound stages . A huge exterior set for the Overlook Hotel hotel was built on the backlot. There is lot on the net about this, do a "google" search with the relevant keywords and see what it brings up.

Stanley Kubrick was afraid of flying which is why his later films were filmed at British film studios.

Cheers,

Jamie

On the demolition of the old studios someone I know found a whole can of film just left lying around on the site which had additional takes of the MGM snowbound scenes on it...

What are the " MGM snowbound scenes ..." ?

Jamie, filming took place at two British studios, as you know one was EMI Elstree and the other was MGM. It was on the MGM backlot that the exterior maze and section of the front of the Hotel was constructed for the snow bound climax involving the snowmobile and chase through the garden maze, everything covered in large fake snow drifts of course.

There's some fantastic sketches, photo's and information on The Shining in Alison Castles The Stanley Kubrick Archives it's a massive tome and probably the last word needed on Kubrick. Great book that covers all of Kubrick's major work on screen - steep price but it's a labour of love this publication well worth the expense.

I had a flick through that book in the bookshop a while back, it is indeed fascinating stuff.

It should be pointed out that at this point the old MGM backlot was no longer part of a working studio - MGM had shut up shop and the backlot was being sold off in pieces for redevelopment.

EMI's backlot was comparatively small and feature film backlot work tended to concentrate around the two water tanks. A telltale for the EMI backlot are the poplar trees that border the site, they always seem to get in shot.

The exterior of the hotel and the maze entrance (the interior of the maze was on a sound stage)were constructed only on the backlot of ABPC (EMI Elstree) in '78. Please correct me if I am wrong, all the time I worked on "The Shining" I never heard of any filming done up at MGM, which closed around '70/'71.
From memory, the Hotel was built at the far side of the studio away from the area that was demolished.

Yes the MGM Studio had closed down - but I've heard from people in the area that a large structure - the maze or part of the maze - was constructed on a part of the old MGM lot and was clearly visible from the road.

To add to the confusion, the "MGM" name was shared with the EMI/ABC studio for a short time - but to clarify, I am talking about part of the old MGM lot after the studio had closed.
