The hotel exterior was the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood, Oregon. There are some shots of the real hotel and there was also a mock-up built at Pinewood. The interiors are largely inspired by a famous lodge in Yosemite National Park, the Ahwahnee, and those interiors were all made at Pinewood. The incredible men's room was also partly based on Frank Lloyd Wright's designs for the Biltmore in Phoenix. I've never heard Liverpool mentioned in any connection and must confess to be a bit mystified when so much info on this movie is available.

"The Shining" was filmed almost entirely on large sets at Elstree Studios rather than Pinewood, that included all the Hotel interiors and the exterior snowbound maze that features in the climax. Stephen King was inspired to write the novel after a stay at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado. The exterior of the hotel was as already mentioned, the Timberline Lodge in North Oregon. The interior sets were partly based on the Ahwanne Hotel,Yosemite, California. Can't imagine Kubrick basing designs for the Hotel on anything in Britain, his attention to detail and accuracy is well known and even the groceries in the kitchen set bore all the brand names of the Denver supermarkets where they had supposedly been purchased.
correction; the maze and snow bound exteriors that feature in the climax were constructed on the back lot at MGM Borehamwood, the rest at Elstree as mentioned. Chris |

As Chris says, the interiors were filmed at EMI (Formerly ABPC) in Boreham Wood. These - apparently - were 'wall to wall' sets which filled the entirety of the largest stage on the lot.
On the demolition of the old studios someone I know found a whole can of film just left lying around on the site which had additional takes of the MGM snowbound scenes on it... Smudge |

Of course, my earlier post said Pinewood (heedlessly following previous posts) when it was indeed at Elstree, Kubrick's favored studio and near to his home. As Kubrick was famous for never travelling to foreign countries, this in itself is the strongest argument against his going to Liverpool.

you and Boris, what a pair, honestly! As you say , not only did Kubrick not like traveling abroad I think he also liked the idea of having the film studio on his doorstep...literaly |
