Default The Shuttered Room

I've found a site here (Norfolk Mills - Hardingham watermill) that details the filming of the mill, it's destruction and David Greene's defence of burning it down, but does anybody know where the ferry jetty and the derelict lighthouse were?

Very interesting site, haven't seen "The Shuttered Room" for years. I can't imagine a film crew these days being allowed to torch a building like that regardless of its condition! Great moment for the film but what a shame for the building itself, it looked rather charming! The 1960s was not especially renowned for the preservation of old and interesting buildings I suppose.

Hardingham is a wonderful place. Mrs Bat and I make a point of attending the excellent Hardingham Fete every year. Next time I'm up that way I'll try and find them .... there's no indication on local signs about them.

It's similar to JL Moxey's City of the Dead in that they attempt to recreate New England in the UK; it's ok but the ending has been changed from the original short story and frankly you can see it a mile off. Olly seems to reprise his gang leader role from The Damned and certainly isn't stretched acting-wise.

Apparently it was a Ken Russell film but he bailed out.

I think there's some truth in Greene's riposte that many of these lovely buildings are ignored and allowed to fall into a poor state until a developer (or film director!) comes along and wishes to demolish them. I'll add some stills later of the above locations.

According to 'English Gothic' (Jonathan Rigby)

"....began shooting in the last week of April 1966, the unit basing itself in Canterbury and striking out to nearby Faversham for its dock and boatworks scenes, an abandoned lighthouse at Dover for Aunt Agatha's coastal stronghold.."

The lighthouse is one of two situated at South Foreland, Dover and would be the building abandoned in 1910 (not the one now owned by the National Trust)
