Default Visiting a Studio

I have always wanted to visit a film lot studio, is there any open to the public, and are any of the really old building still in existence or all torn down.

Donna - I see from your avatar that you have some affinity with the film African Queen. Isleworth Studios (Worton Hall) where interiors were shot, was closed in the early 1950s. Some of the studio buildings and the large house that provided office space remain as part of a small industrial estate on Worton Road TW7.

There are some remnants of others such as at Denham, though not very accessible.

Old studios that are still operational are generally not open to the public (though they are planning something at Pinewood). My wife did recently have a private tour of Ealing as part of a university course she is doing, arranged by the current operators - and very helpful they were too.

You could have gone to Elstree on saturday week, but alas as i found out yesterday the event has sold out.In this country you really have to keep a sharp eye out for events that take place in studios. However abroad it is a different situation.A number of studios in Hollywood and Florida have tours.I have recently returned from munich where i did a tour of Bavaria Studios(where Hitch once worked). In Berlin i have been to the UFA studios and they are really worth a visit.

I visited the Gainsborough Studios when the Almeida used them for a couple of plays. They really are very small indeed (the sound stage for the Lady Vanishes was only 90 feet so there was never more than one carriage).
