Default The Go- Between

Hi folks,

Does anyone know the village location used in The Go-Between which was shown recently on ITV ?
(I know that the mansion house is Melton Constable in Norfolk.)

Cheers,

Jamie Stuart

It's called Thornage.

The Insiders Guide to Thornage in North Norfolk, from northnorfolkimages.co.uk

Thornage was only used for the cricket match. If you go there now, it's just a field by the road into Holt. The village where the family attend church, walk across the green, and the house in which Julie Christie lives , was all shot in the lovely village of Heydon.

Heydon .... where Oliver Cromwell used to spend his summer holidays. A wonderful place ... it has been used for many different films and TV programmes over the years.

Heydon a hidden village..

Fans of The Go-Between might like to note that the original house as imagined by LP Hartley is Bradenham Hall, near Swaffham, and named Brandham in the novel. This house was owned by the Rider Haggards who invited Hartley up for a holiday, which was the seed of the story. The house isn't nearly as grand as Melton Constable, used in the movie, and nor is it open to the public, though its excellent garden is open for the NGS several days a year.

I remember seeing that as a boy and thinking how beautiful it is. It has stayed with me all this time.

Hereafter, in a better world than this,
I shall desire more love and knowledge of you

Unfortunately the house is in poor condition now since the film although the private owners are doing remedial work.
