Hi all,
I'm interested in finding films that have been made in London, preferably East London. If any one has any suggestions please let me know.

Many Thanks

JO

This site should help re East London:

http://www.visiteastlondon.co.uk/fil.../filmstart.htm

Mark Adams' book Movie Locations - A Guide to Britain and Ireland. It gives a popular account of the locations in which many well-known Brit films were shot. Here's a few London locations from the book:

LONDON

Alfie (1966)

Opening sequence is at Vauxhall Bridge where the MI6 building (featured in
the last Bond movie) now stands. Alfie gets around quite a bit: Kings Cross,
Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove and Battersea as well as the Tower where he
meets Shelley Winters.

Anne of a Thousand Days (1969)

Mostly filmed at Hevor Castle near Sevenoaks in Kent but the Royal Naval
College at Greenwich stood in for Henry's Greenwich Palace.

Blow Up (1966)

This often comes up in film newsgroups: the park in which the murder appears
to take place is given in the book as Maryon Park, Woolwich near Charlton station and the Thames Barrier. It would also include Maryon Wilson Park to the south. The Green Chain Walk runs through the parks but anyone wanting to trace Hemmings steps should be aware the area is notorious for muggings. Other locations were Holland Park and West London.

The Blue Lamp (1950)

The book just states Paddington Green (and its now closed police station) and
Kilburn. Paddington Green is just a small street so I assume Adams means the
area around Paddington Basin between the rail terminus and Edgware Road. The
cars chases were filmed in the Harrow Road-Ladbroke Grove area.

A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Thamesmead South (the scene where Alex fights his fellow droogs) and Brunel
University. Adams omits the scenes with the tramp on Chelsea Embankment and
the high rise blocks in Wandsworth.

A Hard Day's Night (1965)

Kew Bridge, Scala Theatre (Charlotte Street), Hammersmith Odeon (now the
Apollo) and Notting Hill Gate. The pub Ringo finds himself in is The Turk's
Head opposite the Twickenham Film Studios at Saint Margarets.

Help (1966)

The City Barge pub at Strand on the Green in Chiswick. The Dolphin Restaurant
at Blandford Street, Marylebone.

The Ladykillers (1955)

Ealing built Katie Johnson's House at the end of Frederica Street off the
Caledonian Road and the heist took place in Cheney Road between St Pancras
and Kings Cross Stations.

The Lavender Hill Mob (1951)

Needless to say, Lavender Hill in Clapham.

Peeping Tom (1960)

Newman Passage and Rathbone Place, north of Oxford Street.

The Servant (1963)

Mostly around Kings Road Chelsea; the pub is the Chelsea Potter, which is
still there; however, Thomas Crapper (Sanitary Engineer by Royal Appointment)
as long gone. James Fox's house was actually Losey's in Royal Avenue off the
Kings Road.

Thanks Dylan -

I have occasionally pondered finding that SERVANT location when in London ; now I can go straight to it !

Another glimpse of London ; the barges (houseboats) moored near Lots Road, Chelsea CROSSPLOT with Roger Moore.

HILTON HOTEL, Park Lane ; THE SANDWICH MAN and the end of THREE HATS FOR LISA.

Not much there in the way of East London tho'.

Some scenes from 'Face' (1995) were filmed in and around Dalston.

Hello chaps. I'm new to this forum! One film in particular that springs to mind is a 60's film called Sparrows Can't Sing. I believe it may have been Barbara Windsor's first film. It was filmed in a post-war East End, with plenty of bomb damage still evident. Only problem is that I don't think it can be bought on either video or DVD. A friend of mine recorded it from TV some years back and copied it for me. I believe A Kid for Two Farthings was filmed in the East End as well.

Actually, now I'm in the swing of it and I've read your email properly, there are loads (particularly from the 60's, which is the only period I know much about!):

Smashing Time (1967) with Rita Tushingham
Joanna (1969)
Georgy Girl (1966) with Lynn Redgrave
Morgan (A Suitable Case for Treatment) with David Warner (1968?)
Up the Junction (1967) with Dennis Waterman

I could go on and on .... !

I thought that Up the Junction was mainly filmed in Battersea.

From an original play written by Stephen Lewis a.k.a. Blakey from 'On The Buses' and who is currently domiciled in 'Last of the Summer Wine'

Yes, I know Up the Junction was filmed around Battersea, but the original email said "London, preferably East London" or some such, so I think Battersea counts as London! ;o)

I didn't realise that stuff about Blakey - jolly interesting ....

Maryon Wilson Park was not used in Blow Up, it was just Maryon Park.

I've visited it 3 times. Is it really notorious for muggings??? Oh my God!! I knew it wasn't the best of areas but...

It looks like I've been lucky to come away unscathed!!

Robert Hamer's "It Always Rains On Sunday" (1947) is set in Bethnal Green. I can't say whether any of it was actually filmed on location, but many of the exteriors (especially the ones featuring the overhead railway line at the junction of Bethnal Green Road and Roman Road) looks authentically of its time.

Believe it or not but a large percentage of Full Metal Jacket, specifically the battle scenes where there is a constant smoke haze & they are hunting the sniper through the destroyed streets was filmed on the Isle of Dogs (or Docklands as we'd refer to it), Canning Town.
All of the palm trees were planted in skips and submerged in the ground to give the authentic Vietnam foliage look, the rest of the place was falling down anyway so a few controlled explosions, piles of hardcore rubble and some fires & smoke damage made it all the more realistic.

The site has been developed now but up to that point the only other usage it had received was that it was the same area that Jean Michel-Jarre used for his docklands concert in 1987.

Essex Boys has some scenes filmed on the Essex/East london/Dagenham border, specifically the taxi rank scene where the Thurrock Bridge can be seen in the background.

The cafe scene where Tom Cruise & John Voight meet in Mission Impossible was filmed in Ponti's which is upstairs in Liverpool St stn. There is also the preceeding scene where he is on the phone standing under the clock in the stn. The office they use for their operations is also directly opposite the stn entrance.

The remake of Thunderbirds uses the Thames, Tower bridge, HMS Belfast, the Lonon Eye and other big landmarks in a couple of scenes although to be fair we'd struggle to call that a film :-)

If I think of any more I'll add them.
