Hello, I'm a sad person of similar obsessions, my biggest at present being where was is the village of 'Loughville' as depicted in that other Subotsky classic "The Monster Club"? There's a motorway sign shortly before Stuart Whitman takes a turn-off into the mist, but I can't read it 'cause I don't have a copy of the film and the screenshot I have is all blurry.

I hope my tale of woe is sufficient to move somebody to help.

Great forum, btw. I just joined.

Welcome demonik,
Ah yes, The Monster Club, now there's a great collection of tales. And with The Pretty Things playing on stage in the club. Wonderful

Steve

Purely from memory I think they went over Tyke's Water Lake bridge to get to Loughville, which would put them on the Aldenham Estate near Borehamwood. I shall have to have another squint at the fillum...

Hi Steve and Smudge. Thanks so much for the welcome and such a prompt reply. Smudge - we're all rooting for you. You can skip over the delights of B. A. Robertson and the Viewers - nobody's gonna hold that against you (although it would be nice to know where the 'club' scenes were filmed) - it's mainly the "where's Loughville, then?" brainstrainer that's done me in for years.

And remember: there's a direct link to britmovie from our seriously unhappening R. Chetwynd-Hayes board resting on this!

Later

Just checked on Avengerland, and that's the bridge OK! Well done, Smudge. Great work on the 'From Beyond The Grave' locations, too.

Apologies -

I just haven't got round to watching the film ; in fact I only watched one film this weekend and that was simply because it had just started as I was contemplating what to have for breakfast !

So if it was Tyke's bridge, I would assume that the police car ride happens somewhere around the Barnet by-pass - from the look of the turn off they take (again from memory).

As to the Chetwynd-Hayes board, do tell me more. I was an avid reading of his spooky stories all through school. I recall that I read every volume that the library could get their hands on (it helps if you live opposite the library !). I've occasionally scouted EBay for his titles, but hey never seem to have the volumes I remember.

I'd like to pop into your board and see what's happening.

Cheers,

Smudge

i have a question i hope you can help me with, the actual standing stones that featured at the start of pychomania and featured in the movie ,do you know where that was shot
prob not far from a busy road as is apparent in one shot when george sanders(who committed suicide after filming) visited the bikers at asid location

There are many reasons why I like Psycho--first, it's Hitchcock. IAlso, 'm still a fan of Janet Leigh.

But, I'm very familiar with the opening scenes of the film--Phoenix, as it was, in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Hitchcock centers the camera down on what was the Luhrs Hotel--now long demolished. The Luhrs was once the gathering spot of politicians and king-makers in Arizona. By the time Psycho came along, though, it had seen better days, and it was, as either Janet or John Gavin said in the film, something to the effect of being a run-down hotel for their 'quickies.' I don't know if this created any temporary reservations from the film-going public.

When Janet's character is driving north on Central Avenue and sees her boss, who's wondering why is she out driving when she claimed a headache and was going home? For me, anyway, it's like taking a time machine back to 1960--Upton's, the old Adams Hotel, etc.

I only know bits and pieces of the Psychomania story as I used to live nearby Shepperton/Walton a very long time ago. If you go to Amazon you'll find there's a recent book BRITISH HORROR FILM LOCATIONS. I haven't seen it myself yet, but it might just help...
