Being rather sad, I have tracked down a few film locations in my time.

Has anyone visited a film location and been shocked by how rough the area was?

When I first visited Maryon Park (the park used in Blow Up) about six years ago, someone had driven a car into the fencing of the tennis courts and set it on fire.

Some people have no respect for cinematic landmarks! The whole surrounding area is pretty rough to be honest.

The worst one for me was Thamesmead. A few months ago I went to Binsey Walk which is where Alex attacks his droogs by the water in A Clockwork Orange. I can understand why Kubrick used that location; it is UNBELIEVABLY bleak and intimidating.

A real hell on earth.

Apologies to the residents of Thamesmead who may use this site.. :-(

Try Newman Passage, off Rathbone Street, London W1, as used in Peeping Tom (1960). Still just like it was in the film although the newsagents that sold the naughty pictures is now (or was last time I was there) a coffee shop. That's just up the road at 29 Rathbone Street.

I used to spend Sundays riding around London looking for film locations like:
-The Balloon Tavern in Chelsea used for a few scenes in The Deadly Affair (1967). This is now recently refitted as some poncy restaurant
-The roads around Clapham used to film the car chase scene between James Booth and John Wayne in Brannigan (1975).
-The creepy church where the priest gets speared in The Omen which is right near Putney bridge. Fortunately this hasn't changed a great deal

Visited Maryon Park just a couple of months ago. I think the Local Authority might have tidied up their act a little bit. The main park area around the tennis courts seemed to be pretty well kept. The 'top lawn', where the famous photographs were taken, is a little bit overgrown, but still immediately recogniseable. You get a real thrill as you walk up the steep sloping steps and catch your first glimpse of the top lawn (or maybe that's just me!).

I know what you mean about the 1960's housing estate that leads up to the entrance gate with the famous trees guarding the entrance, it's not exactly a pretty sight and as you say, the whole surrounding area in general seems a bit rough (apologies to the good burghers of Charlton!). Ironically, you can actually see some of he construction work in progress in the film itself.
I visited on a Sunday afternoon, and apart from a couple of lads playing football, it was totally deserted. Very atmospheric. I would recommend a visit to anyone who is a fan of the film.

Best,
Chas.

That visit in 1999 was my first of 3, the most recent one being in June this year.

It sounds like we just missed each other!! lol (I visited on a Wednesday, June 1st in fact)

The grass on the upper level was quite overgrown, probably at knee height. The tree that the body lay behind has gone as has the line of trees on the left hand side from Hemmings' point of view when he was photographing Redgrave and her boyfriend.

Between my first and second visits in Oct '99 and Feb '02, a public bench was placed on the upper level of the park. When I visited again in June '05, I saw, to my amusement, that other visitors had scratched references to Blow Up on the bench.

I took photographs of course and last month saw the following photo on the web that was almost identical to the one I took of that same bench in June.

Apple .Mac

That photo was taken before my last visit because there are now more Blow Up etchings on it!!

Between my second and third visits (Feb '02 and June '05) an information plaque has been placed near the tennis courts detailing the history of the surrounding parks and makes reference to Blow Up being filmed at Maryon Park.

Incidentally I visited Binsey Walk in Thamesmead on the same day. Thamesmead makes Charlton look like Mayfair!!

Anyone got any recent photos of Binsey Walk ?

Id love to find the location used for exterior shots of the health farm? anyone got any ideas?
IMDB has these 2 locations listed:

Shenley Lodge, Shenley, Hertfordshire, England, UK
Edgwarebury Hotel, Barnet Lane, Elstree, Hertfordshire, England, UK

im interested to know if this might be one of them or what these 2 places are used for?

this is where the tramp is attacked in Clapham

Hi

I've never seen Clockwork Orange - but I know quite a bit about Maryon Payk in Blow Up. May I suggest this link, assuming you haven't spotted it already?

Strangled Spiked

Cheers

The opening scene in Blow Up where David Hemmings is leaving a refuge for homeless was actually the old workhouse in Gordon Rd Peckham. It is still there as is the railway arch. The workhouse has now been turned into yuppy flats for the rich.

Shenley is also the location of the borstal that Ray Winstone et al are incarcerated in 'Scum' - but it was knocked down in the 1990's and is now a country park. Not sure if that's the same as the Shenley lodge referred to here...

Shenley Lodge IS the health farm and is easily visible from the road. This is a now a private school. With regards to Edgwarebury Hotel - this is the bedroom of ' Home ' and the timber framed exterior seen when Alex jumps from the window. It is also possibly used for the ' Home ' Snooker room sequence. I believe it is still a hotel. Now go and thump another officer Carlin!.

Ettington Hall, Nr. Stratford On Avon. Now that is one scary place. The outside was the location for the 1960s "THE HAUNTING".
