This is my nearby airfield, not quite the effect Asquith was seeking methinks:

But...we still don't seem to be any nearer jimsigs question on where the hotel was.
I've a hunch where it is (Yorkshire again), does anybody have a hotel screengrab from the film they can post? Smudge?

Hello All,
Thank you so much for all the very interesting replies you made regarding the pub featured in the film "The Way to the Stars".
I have been away for a few days but was able to actually go out and take a picture of the pub I have in mind. It is called 'The White Hart' and is located in Cricklade near Cirencester. (not Lechlade that I was thinking of).
I have the photo in JPeg on the computer but do not know how to put it on this forum for all to see. Perhaps someone could help me.

Regards

Jim

While making The Way to the Stars, Asquith struck up one of the more unlikely friendships of his life with Joe Jones, owner of a transport cafe in Catterick, who subsequently employed him as a dishwasher and waiter.
The hotel was near Northallerton I suspect.
The Asquith version

Hello All,

Re The Way to the Stars, here is the photo of the hotel in Cricklade near Cirencester. Thanks to Steve for instructions on how to do this.

Perhaps 'my' hotel only looks like the one in the film, but ever since 1972 when I moved to this area from Catterick (Army service 1949-72_), I have often thought that this was the correct hotel.
Oh well, you cannot win them all.

Many thanks anyway.

I've dredged this up from the archive because, having seen the film again today, I'm still not sure where the filming of the local village/town was shot.

It seems quite distinctive, from the hotel to the war memorial. Someone must know...

Smile The Way To The Stars

I looked up The Way To The Stars in IMDB,and a comment was passed that it was filmed at the Golden Lion Hotel in Northallerton and around the Bedale area of North Yorkshire. Is this true?

The comment could be correct as the station used in the film is RAF Catterick, not many miles away.

Cheers Marky B.

I had tried in the past to find out where the Golden Lion Hotel was situated.

Does anyone know whether the 'Halfpenny Field' depicted in the film actually exists? I can find no reference to the place. There is a village called Halfpenny Green but that is situated in the Midlands area near Shipley.

Dave.

Cheers Freddy.

I wonder if it contains the inscribed concrete block that was shown in the film as being dedicated to Halfpenny Green and it being listed in the Doomsday Book?

Dave.

Hi Rob,

Does the small picture seen in the following link look like the one in the film?
Going on memory I think it does.
I can remember the entrance to the hotel in the film being very similar.

Northallerton, North Yorkshire : Sheridan's North West, Yorkshire & North Lincolnshire

Cheers

Dave.
