Hi Drew - this has come up before and I too would like to know the whereabouts of the Windyridge street. I'd guess it's within a ten mile radius of Shepperton but that covers a lot of suburban streets.

I'm also trying to locate the "tree in the middle of the road" location from School for Scoundrels having successfully located the apartment block used by the Ian Carmichael character and the garage used by the dodgy car salesmen.

Best of luck with your enquiries and post the result if it's positive.
Hello there,

Any chance of you telling us where Ian Carmichael's apartment block and the garage used by the dodgy car salesmen are?

Thank you,
Christopher Matheson

Hi Christopher,
Mulberry Close, off Parson Street N4 and the A404 Pinner Road in Harrow respectively. The latter site is now occupied by a Hyundai dealership.

Cheers
Alan

Thanks Alan, I'm always fascinated by film locations. Sadly there are no exterior shots viewable on the website for the Hyundai dealership, would be interesting to see how it's changed. Some mugshots on there which reminded me of Peter Jones and Dennis Price though

The road by the garage has changed relatively little. The large garage (Central Garage from memory) opposite the dodgy one is still there too, but is now just a filling station.

Ever so slightly off topic, well area. There is a book by Evan Mark G Jones called "Film and TV Locations in Thames & Chiltern Country" which covers over 150 locations from the 1950s onwards. It's very good for the area around Pinewood and further afield

Sounds like a useful book. Shame it's only from the 1950s onwards. There are quite a few films made in Pinewood (& Denham) in the 1940s for which I'd like to discover some of the locations.

I have watched the film again recently (my favourite British comedy) and tried to work out where it might be. The road looks a bit narrow to be on a bus route but assuming that is a genuine london transport bus stop, and that the film was made at Shepperton, I would say that it looks very Esher/Weybridge/Oxshott/Walton which are all on the fringes of the London Transport bus region. I reckon the only way to find out would be to try to get in touch with George Cole (a very nice man apparently) and see if he remembers.

The Green Man hotel interior is definitely a film set. When you see Alastair Sim rush to escape, the glimpse of the garden through the door is obviously not real.

I watched it again last night, Alexis, and thought again what a great film it was. They did mention Turnham Green a few times, which I think is around Chiswick in West London. However, I agree with you about the Esher area. I used to live in Claygate, and I don't think it's there.

The only disappointing thing for me was Jill Adams' performance - that silly wide eyed look that she did rather too many times.

Is the Green Man based on a book, and if so, is Windy Ridge taken from the book? I very much doubt Windy Ridge was the real name of the house they nominated for the location. To me it looks Uxbridge or so. The concrete roads and late 20's early 30's architecture looks typical.

Actually, Windridge was the name of our house when we moved in - and pretty appropriate at nearly 900ft on a spur of the Pennines!

It was originally a stage play (different title) I doubt if the script was changed a lot because the setting is very stagey - Act 1 Windyridge Act 2 The Green Man.

Good looker, but mediocre acting skills. I know she was in a few other films in 50s/60s but I don't recall her. Sir Gregory Upshott's bit of fluff was very demure as well, but I've never seen her in anything else.

Incidentally, I'm thinking of buying the Green Man DVD with School for Scoundrels on it, which I've never seen - is School for Scoundrels good?
