Default The Green Man - Locations

Hi All - what a great board! thumbs_u

I watched an old fave of mine the other day 'The Green Man' which is wonderful.

I just wondered if anyone knew where any of the locations are, such as the street where Windyridge house is and The Green Man hotel (- if it actually existed)

I did a quick search on www.famouslocations.com but found nothing.

John.

The interiors in "Windyridge" were likely to be shot in the studio, but the exterior almost certainly shows a genuine, detached house in some leafy Surrey lane. Lets hope someone can identify it (on a similar theme, does anyone know the house / road where the exterior shots of "Bless this house" from 1972 were filmed?)

Bless This House was filmed in Windsor, Bolton Ave.

I was there just three weeks ago and will post pix once I get round to restoring my gallery here.

Betty & Trevor's house hasn't changed much at all. Sid's and Terry Scott's have been altered by extensions.

Knowing how tight with their budgets British producers tended to be (often out of necessity) Windyridge probably lies within a 10 mile radius of Shepperton. Doesn't help much I know, but there was nothing singular enough in the suburban location to merit looking further afield.

Betty and Trev's is now up for sale, so if anyone has £,675,000 they can REALLY go Britmovie lifestyle...

In one of the exterior shots a London Transport bus stop can be seen so it's definitely in the Greater London area. Narrows it down somewhat eh?
We have a similar problem trying to recognise The Bull in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. There's a red bus stop (bus stops for the green buses are different) on the road just outside. But red buses go a long way out from central London.

We suspect that The Bull is on the old A4 near Heathrow. But there have been quite a few changes in that area since 1942 - like having a small city called Heathrow dumped upon what was a country village.

If only they had showed a bus at the bus stop then we'd know which route it was on.

I find the detective work quite f un. I've managed to identify a couple of key locations in School For Scoundrels recently which had been taxing my addled brain for a while - no NOT the tennis court, that's well known as being the Edgewarebury Hotel at Elstree. Steve's right about the difficulties presented by locations which have developed over the years but others - such as the west country ones chosen for The Titfield Thunderbolt in 1952 - have hardly altered.

Also in Ian Charmichael & Terry-Thomas territory, I couldn't help but notice that the car/motorbike chase at the end of supposedly Oxford based 'Lucky Jim' passes London Transport bus stops and signs for Stanwell. The station looks almost but not quite West Drayton. Handy for Shepperton I suppose...

I KNOW IT MAY BE MORE RECENT, BUT THE HOUSE IN THE YOUNG POISONERS HANDBOOK WHICH WAS SUPPOSED TO BE IN ST ALBANS WAS ACTUALLY FILMED IN HIGH BANK ROAD PENDLEBURY IN LANCASHIRE AND AGAIN HAS BEEN CHANGED BY HOME IMPROVEMENTS.

Windy Ridge is a tough one. Also has anyone identified the Hotel they go to "the Green Man" in "Newcliffe"? A mural on the wall shows Brighton Pavilion (although maybe studio set). Exterior looks turn of century pub/hotel.

Hi Drew - this has come up before and I too would like to know the whereabouts of the Windyridge street. I'd guess it's within a ten mile radius of Shepperton but that covers a lot of suburban streets.

I'm also trying to locate the "tree in the middle of the road" location from School for Scoundrels having successfully located the apartment block used by the Ian Carmichael character and the garage used by the dodgy car salesmen.

Best of luck with your enquiries and post the result if it's positive.
