I'm currently into films with a strong locational feel of the late 50's early 60's.
Taste of Honey ,Hell is a City ,Billy Liar,Kind of Loving etc. Are these the pinnacle or can you point me towards others that show blighty as it used to be before retail parks.

I'd suggest 'The loneliness of the long distance runner' and 'Whistle down the Wind' for a bit of countryside and 'Poor Cow' and 'Get Carter' for a bit of urban sprawl.

Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush for the feeling of the "New Towns" or is 1967 outside your time range?

I'll have to add "I Start Counting" from 1969 and filmed, I believe, in Bracknell.

Too right. POINT ROYAL (the flats) and the estate surrounding is AFAIK the only 1960s conservation area in the country. Even Pevsner liked it, saying that he wished the architectural composition had been balanced by three towers, not just one.

Also as seen in Lumet's THE OFFENCE.

There is also The Deadly Affair (1966 - a bit after the time maybe) which was filmed primarily around the Clapham/Chelsea area of London and also in central London. The Balloon Tavern near the new Chelsea Conrad is still standing, although it is now a swanky restaurant. Great underrated film with loads of famous recognisable faces.

The Gideon's Way TV series boxed set is similarly evocative...

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

I think Spring & Port Wine set in Bolton is particularly good as far as location is concerned. As stated previously, Gideon's Way also provides some good snapshots of London in the mid sixties.

Billy Liar was filmed in and around Bradford, West Yorkshire in fact the scene where Billy and his friend talk using slang Yorkshire dialect in a Sq, it is called Foster Sq and you can just see Bradford Cathedral in the background. The scene in the dance hall is nto a set but an actual hall and the entrance is the same hall the old Locarno on Maningham Lane (talk about continuity of sets) which is still standing and is now a disco.

It is cruel to discover one's mediocrity only when it is too late.

If you want to experience the atmosphere of west London in the early 60's, there's no better film than Michael Winner's "West 11" (1963) for a taste of dingy bedsit life. Mainly shot around Earl's Court, it also includes a wonderful scene in an ultra-groovy Wimpy Bar opposite the Aldwych - probably the best cinematic record of a Wimpy in its heyday.

And Winner's "The System", made the following year, gives a pretty good picture of life in a seaside resort -Devon, if memory serves - at the time.

Another 50s film well worth checking out for its location footage is "The secret place" with Belinda Lee, Ronald Lewis and a very young David McCallum. For some reason this film seems to have gone out of circulation in the UK although it was regularly televised when I was a child in the 60s. Set in London, there is plenty of street scene activity which adds hugely to the enjoyment of watching it now.

For me, it would have to be "A Canterbury Tale." While it may not precisely fit your specifics, ACT gives one the feel, the historical whispers and poetry of the British countryside and the inherent love of it quite unlike other films. I can never resist its whole dreamlike effect of by-gone days. A wonderful film created by the PnP magicians.

Best,

Barbara
