Steven, the location of Miss Marples cottage , "Old Pasture Lane, Milchester." is in Denham
It's had it's centre front path grassed over, access now being at the side. (Perhaps too many 'MarpleTourists' were walking up it to have their photos taken ! ? ) ![]() . . . . then straight ahead and round to the right ( about 200yds ) is the location used in the opening shots of Murder at the Gallop and Murder Ahoy :- ![]() - the pub across the road is the Green Man and sells GreenKing IPA ![]() (and nice cheese sandwiches !) Ady. PS *** - do these pictures load quick enough, or should I make them smaller ? Anyone having problems seeing them ? Last edited by Ady; 06-04-2007 at 09:52 PM.. Reason: links fixed |

No they're excellent - and I totally agree with you re: the Forum - absolutely brilliant - let's hope you can now trace the Ackenhtorpe Estate! Going back to the train D603 - There is a photo on the web of it at Reading Railway Station - it was used from 1958 until 1967 and ran on the Great Western Line - Western Region. (I am also not a train spotter - just been doing a bit of digging on the web - honest!!!) Last edited by CC1; 08-10-2006 at 09:36 PM.. Reason: more info added |

I WAS a train spotter in my misspent youth, and what's more, on that line, and I can REMEMBER seeing D603 and marking it off in my little train spotters book!None of which gets us the slightest bit further forward in identifying that bridge, though... A wild guess, but I think it's between Slough and Readingrgds Rob |

D603 was a North British-built "Warship" and could have been filmed on the former Great Western-Great Central Joint route near Denham, the next station from West Ruislip where the Central Line ends. The line is that from Paddington to Birmingham and Wolverhampton, then Birkenhead. That would eb the case if it was a two-track line. If the embankment was a four-tracker then it's the former GWR main line.
If the golf course scene is basically set in the same location as the road tunnel then it could be in the Twyford area or near Aynho Junction in rural Buckinghamshire. Last edited by Automotivehistorian; 08-04-2007 at 04:59 PM.. |

My 2d's worth...
I have the dubious pleasure of working in the Thames Valley...and do a fair old mileage. I'm pretty sure that the elusive tunnel and gates are not Reading - Maidenhead. From looking at my maps and looking at the type of stone used I would suggest that if the line is running roughly NW - SE it could be the line that runs up towards Aylesbury from High Wycombe. That said...This is an extract from CBRD - Welcome to the Site! '1963 The Beeching Report to the government. This was to do with railways but is still important: Beeching reccommended shutting down about 25% of the rail network, mostly branch lines and quieter bits. The government spent the next couple of years doing this. It was tacitly expected that most people would use roads from now on. In the years that followed, the Department of Transport regularly plundered the rail budget to build more roads. 1966 Landmark year in motorway building; the M4 Severn Bridge is completed linking England and Wales and cutting short an 80 mile detour around the estuary, and progress on other long distance routes such as the M1 and M6 is nearing completion. By 1966 it was possible to travel between Birmingham and Lancaster by motorway, most of the way from London to Leeds, and on substantial parts of the routes from London to the Channel Ports. Other bits and pieces were open too, most notably sections of the M4, the M40 some of the way to Oxford and parts of the M62 around Manchester.' As you can see this was a fairly turbulent time for our road and rail network, I suggest, therefore, that there is the distinct possibility that the location will no longer be the same, and will not necessarily feature as the same layout on a current map. |

Hello all
I was (hopefully) going to amaze everybody by posting a recent picture of the road tunnel and the gates to the Ackenhtorpe Estate but the posting rules say that I may not post attachments, so that's my big moment out of the window. Instead I will just have to tell you where it is. It's Amerden Lane, Maidenhead. But There's no house, there never was. The only shots from this location are the bridge, the gates, the scenes at the foot of the embankment, those parts of the golf scene which face the railway and Mr Stringer's POV when he hears the train coming (Why does he look the wrong way?) Even the scene where Marple & Stringer walk along the railway was filmed elsewhere (Off the end of the down platform at Denham, before you ask) There are a couple of clues in the film that the gates and the house aren't related, firstly the layout. The gates and drive are parallel to the railway, which would surely put the house square to it, and yet, in the golf scene the house appears parallel with, and some distance from, the railway. Secondly, in one of Ady's video captures we see another set of gates. It could be argued that Old Ackenthorpe was not the most welcoming homeowner, but two sets of gates? I Include the customary link to Flash Earth which shows the patch of grass from the golf scene http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=51.522006&lon=-0.692672&z=17.9&r=0&src=msl Oh I nearly forgot. The bridge under the railway is made of brick. The stone bridge in the video capture is a trick of the light. Last edited by Alan F; 17-04-2007 at 01:20 AM.. Reason: Left out question mark |
