Hi, In the mid 1950's I was staying with one of my elder brothers in Bethnal Green, and While out playing with the local kids in the Bombed out Church, Beside the old Columbia Buildings, in Columbia Road, a mass of people turn up in their cars etc. and started to film a Lady who would walk around a corner, cross the road, and go back and do it again, as kids we were completely puzzled with what was going on, until some local adults were attracted by the excitement and explained everything to us, The Lady I remember was Vivien Leigh, and although I can not be certain I think the film was The Deep Blue Sea, It must have been either 1954 or 1955.
The old Columbia Building were pulled down very soon after this time and my brother was re-housed in Keeling House, in Temple Street, just off Hackney Road, near The two Brewers pub.

Some scenes in Gangster No. 1 were shot in Bethnal Green, with the 'Double 6' club being on Boundary Street E2 and the taxi scene at the back of Weaver Street. Freddie Mays' club was atually a warehouse at the end of The Oval, off Hackney Road.

Thorold Dickinson's "It Always Rains On Sunday" (1947 ?) has to be the ultimate Bethnal Green flick. Lots of sets I know, but some locations I''m certain. If I remember correctly, the British Rail Stn features very near the end (not the railway train/track chase).

Some of Velvet Goldmine was filmed at the old Bethnal Green town hall on Cambridge Heath Rd.

Eastern Promises was filmed on Broadway Market which is round the corner from the town hall.

On TV, loads of Gideon's Way was shot around Bethnal Green.

Some of the stage scenes in "Isadora" were filmed in an old hall in East London, but I can't remember where. Certainly not Walthamstow, but possibly Bethnal Green, although for some reason I'm thinkig Bow. Anyone know ?

As a total guess I would say York Hall as it's another favourite BG filming location and again was featured in Gangster No. 1.

Possibly Wilton's Music Hall? That's a very popular filming location as well.

I've not seen Isadora but Wilton's Music Hall would have been almost completely derelict at the time of filming. Assuming the Isadora theatre looks fairly smart, it's unlikely to be Wiltons. Great building though and well worth visiting.

Quite a few scenes from 1984 was shot in Bethnal Green. They used a street called Cheshire Street. They even went as far as taking up all the lamposts in the street and installing lamposts on the buildings so that they were out of shot. The bedroom scenes with John Hurt were done on some scaffolding made into a room behind one of the shops in Cheshire street. The street was so run down they had to renovate it to look like it had been through WW3. lol.
The pawnbrokers shop was filmed at 33 cheshire street.
