It was very remiss of me, and there is no excuse, to miss this thread, but after visiting a related thread, I checked it out and I just have to say... guys, excellent, thanks. This kind of spontaneous stuff beats intended comedy every time.

I've just seen a posting in aus.dvd that claims The Snow Goose is due to be shown on an Australian paytv channel in the next couple of months. Apparently, there was a commercial for it - I suspect for the forthcoming remake.

Although I fear it is mistaken, could our friends in the colonies check it out on the slightest of chance that it is the original?

a copy of the snow goose film exists! it is in the archive at the UCLA film and television archive in california, in their hallmark hall of fame section. unfortunately they do not make copies and the loan criteria are quite strict. at least we know it's out there in good condition though. see this link for a partial list of their hallmark movies, and this link for info about the archive.

edit: actually there appears to be several copies in their archive, see here for the details of each copy they have. also of interest is an interview with gallico on the set of the hallmark production of gallico's The Small Miracle, see here.

Yes, I was aware of the existence of a perfect copy. Shame it is so far away - I don't think I can justify going that far to Mrs Fell!

Of course, if I ever get round to organsing a John Muir Trail trip I'll have the perfect excu..opportunity b

Neither of those seem to work for me.

Why isn't it generally available Fell? Was Gallico unhappy with the adaptation of his treatment?

I read somewhere that he felt that he'd said everything he wanted in the novella and that the film added nothing - despite the fact that he'd written the screenplay. It seems a very odd attitude as I've not come across anyone who has seen it and not been deeply moved.

I remember reading it, and The Small Miracle. 3-4 years before the film came out and being moved by both but the film did more for me. Not just Jenny - the voices of herself and Richard Harris were absolutely perfect for it.

As you say, begs the question why write the screenplay and green light an adaptation. Sounds more like an afterthought made with the benefit of hindsight.

I read somewhere that Gallico's estate has no objection to it being released so I am not convinced it is Gallico's decision, especially since he wrote its screenplay and it was very well received. It is possible that this remake has been in gestation for some years so Fox decided to keep it withdrawn out of their own interests

I think he specified that it shouldn't be shown in his lifetime. An American friend has been in contact with his family who now have no objections. I believe they said the decision lay with Hallmark and the BBC - and the BBC passed the buck to Hallmark.

I suspect Wolfgang isn't be too far off the mark about commercial interests.
