Default I Love Australia

Nor the Moon by Night
Sacha Molitorisz, reviewer
October 29, 2007

Despite some capable acting, this suffers what US distributors might term a "rectal death".

Channel ABC Date Wednesday October 31Time12:35 AM

A title considered not quite robust enough by US distributors who relabelled the film with the somewhat more evocative name Elephant Gun for its US release.

Alice Lang (Belinda Lee) has been a pen friend to Andrew Miller, a game warden at an African safari park, for years. When her dear old mum finally pegs out, she is able to realise her ambition to visit him. Andrew (Patrick McGoohan) sends his brother Rusty (Michael Craig) to meet Alice at the airport and bless my soul if there isn't an instant attraction. A bit rough on Andy but not nearly as rough as the treatment he receives from a pack of lions in the sanctuary. They rip him up big time, creating opportunities for a love-smitten poacher's daughter, Thea (Anna Gaylor), to nurse him.

Meanwhile Alice's emotional problems over which brother she fancies most are temporarily forgotten when an inspector calls to inquire whether she might have hastened her mum's demise. Andrew makes the right choice, justice is done and everyone lives happily ever afterwards in a rose-hued, musk-flavoured lozenge that, despite some capable acting, loses traction about halfway through and suffers what US distributors might term a "rectal death". That is, it dies in the bum.

Just a public note to thank those who offered to help. You were very kind. The man from Dorrigo, he said Yes...........

I had thought this was a film I might never see again when my old video went belly-up. I couldn't stop grinning like a loon as I watched it again last night..... with the added bonus of the stunning Belinda Lee.

The Aussie A.B.C. channel regularly screen old British movies in the wee hours apparently. What a 'scandal' that our own B.B.C. hasn't the wit to do something similar and offer future generations the chances to see the hundreds of old British pictures that will otherwise become forgotten, instead of the rubbish they seem to show in return for the license fee we all pay. A glance at BBC3 last night showed me that had I chosen to stay up and watch, or video-tape, that channel in the wee hours, I would have been rewarded by z-list celebrities learning to do hair-dressing and neurotics discussing the size of their extremities. What a farce.

You forgot to mention that ABC 2 are now also featuring an old Brit film most nights - and before midnight.
