There is no current UK DVD release and it's not in ITVDVDs Powell and Pressburger box set.

There are some ridiculously over-priced deleted and used copies on amazon.co.uk ....

Amazon.co.uk: The Small Back Room [1949]: David Farrar,Kathleen Byron,Jack Hawkins,Milton Rosmer,Cyril Cusack,Emrys Jones,Michael Goodliffe,Sid James,Leslie Banks,Michael Gough,Geoffrey Keen,June Elvin,David Hutcheson,Robert Morley,Elwyn Brook-Jones,

But the fact that it was released, even though it's out of print now, means that there are second hand copies that are offered for sale every so often. I've often seen them offered on eBay although there are none being offered at the moment

It was also released on video and there are some second hand copies available on Amazon UK at a more reasonable price than the DVD

I have never seen any indication that it's ever been commercially released in the States

Billy,

I have a near-commercial quality print of 'The Small Back Room'. I'll follow-up with a PM later today.

I love this film. It tends to get unfairly overlooked in favour of P&P's big colour productions that preceded it.

It's expected to be released on Criterion DVD in August. They've already sorted out most of the extras and are just finishing things off.

The Small Back Room will be released in the USA by Criterion 19 August:

On the basis of these recent postings I had another viewing of the film last night. I still think it's great. The lighting on many of the night interiors is extraordinary. Actors in near-silhouette with just a very tight spot illuminating faces. Moody or what?!!

The whisky-bottle fantasy sequence still delights.

Yes, although that's a region 2 DVD and it doesn't have any extras. The Criterion DVD will have a commentary and some interesting interviews

But did you notice the obviously fake bird flying away outside the window when they went back to the flat?

Yep - it's on a string!!

Also, near the beginning as Michael Gough is travelling in a taxi in heavy rain, a quick cut of the view through the windscreen shows it to be covered in water yet when the wiper flicks it does not clear it away.

There are some odd reaction cutaways that are held just a little too long and were clearly shot just-in-case as an editing device.
