Default Advice needed...

Where is the best place to buy old films? I've only been buying them for a short while and (so far) have only bought from Amazon. I've never had any problems with Amazon but there must be other places to buy old English films?

For purchases in the UK I can thoroughly recommend play.com, (Play.com (UK): DVDs, Music CDs, MP3s, Video Games, Books, Electronics & Gadgets - Free Delivery). Their prices consistently seem to be the cheapest and postage in the UK is free. Their service too is quick and reliable - I have bought over 50 dvd's from them without hitch, the one item that did fail to turn up was replaced immediately with no questions asked.

Best wishes

I like choices direct for films they to replace them quickly if any problems occur, ebay is also good for finding films that you really want and find it hard to buy in the UK as you can buy from any where on ebay.

I used to rate them until I tried to order the DVD of O LUCKY MAN from them well in advance of its release. A few weeks after its release, when it still hadn't shown up, I contacted them and was told it couldn't be sent because of some copyright law over the soundtrack (????). Why they couldn't have told me sooner is anyone's guess. I got it from Amazon straight away and slightly cheaper and haven't been back since.

If you ever want to order a Region 1 DVD - and there are plenty of old Brit movies still only on R1 - then I heartily recommend Caiman. Fast, reliable and friendly. I buy from them a lot.

The much maligned ebay is indeed a great place to find Brit films not available in the UK, and I don't just mean dvdr's. Germany, Spain, and Greece have loads of Brit films available legitimately.... also Australia and the US. Amazon.de is also a great place to look.

eBay can be very useful. But caveat emptor

It's always worth checking around before buying a new dvd - I alternate between Amazon, Ebay, Sendit, HMV, Moviemail and probably quite a few others as prices can vary a lot. With boxsets it's almost always a good idea to wait a couple of months - HMV often has humungous bargains on their website. The one thing I never seem to do nowadays is actually buy from a shop except in the sales (Borders is always worth having a look in as their sales are different from shop to shop. But their full-priced dvds are always about £5 more expensive than anywhere else).

I think Steve pointed out (and it's true) that Amazon.ca is usually cheaper than Amazon.com because of the postage.

That's true. If possible it's best to stick to sellers that you know are reliable and/or have excellent feedback. It is very easy to get stiffed.

Absolutely Bats, and I'd like to add The Netherlands to your group of countries.
