That's exactly how my other half feels about CCH, Donna- she can't bear to watch it because of the kids at the end. Brillant stuff though ( IMHO ).

Good. You're not supposed to like it. It's supposed to upset you so much that you start campaigning to prevent it from happening to anyone else.

One of the consequences of this film (actually an episode of The Wednesday Play) was the formation of the housing charity Shelter

Steve

Actually, that wasn't entirely the case.

Shelter was founded in 1966 by a chap called Bruce Kenrick, who was a one man social reform unit. You name it, Bruce Kenrick was against it.

Kenrick was a man of enormous energy who had had been campaigning for better housing for years. Shelter would have been up and running with or without Cathy Come Home, although it must be said it didn't do Kenrick's campaign any harm.

I must say that I agree with Donna on this. I have the DVD and have found it great for trading on, but it isn't the sort of movie you want to watch if you fancy a bit of a laugh at the end of the day

Doubtless Cathy Come Home wasn't the only reason for Shelter being launched. But it was started in December 1966, and Cathy Come Home was broadcast in November 1966 so I think we can say that it was significant

As Steve has already said, you're not supposed to enjoy it. I doubt many of us found The War Game a barrel of laughs either.

The problem with the crying kids is something that has followed Ken Loach around for much of his career -- in the name of realism, he will upset people for real.

The meanest one might be KES, where the kids didn't realise they were going to get the belt for real. And that doesn't even make sense to me: if Loach wanted realistic reactions, the kids should have known what was coming -- he could have bribed them to accept the belt, and filmed their real anticipation of the event. Instead he filmed acting, followed by inappropriate surprise at the pain. This is more like sadism than realism to me.

The other one in Kes was when Billy discovers the dead kestrel. Poor old David Bradley, he really did think that it was one of the birds he'd been working with for the last few weeks. In fact it was a kestrel that had died of natural causes - but they didn't tell him that. That's why he throws himself onto the couch with such passion

He should've walked out of shot and kicked Ken Loach in the stomach.
