The 1974 version is pretty dire, but I would be intrigued in seeing any of the 'international' versions released which included Iranian detectives looking into the case and other moments (revolving around the Attenborough character) set in Spain.
Oddly enough it was not released in Britain until 1976, long after the rest of the world had savoured its qualities. |

Although it is an enjoyable film, to my mind it gets by on a conceit that is always going to be engrossing. The whole enterprise smacks of a cynical attempt to cash in on "Murder On the Orient Express" in the way of one ingenious and complex tax dodge. My cynicism is only compounded when Charles Aznavour wanders in, sings his hit song and is immediately knocked off. As for Oliver Reed...well I normally am a big fan but you ca see him visibly laughing during this entire film. Always chuckling or with a big smirk on his face, unable to take the whole thing seriously. Plus if anyone can tell me how a dozen people can be certain they have thoroughly searched a hotel of that massive size, I'd be intrigued to know. For all that (and because of all that) it is the perfect example of a Harry Alan Towers production. |
