Not to the best of my knowledge, your best alternative might be to seek out a broadcast tape.

"Chu Chin Chow" (1934) is about to be released on DVD in the US by VCI Entertainment. It's a 3 disc set and includes the American version of the film as well as the newly restored extended cut.

From what I have been reading recently, NTSC tapes may also be playable in Britain too.
If your VCR was bought in the last few years, and your TV is co-operative, the chances are you're right - but I'd certainly check first before splashing out.

(Ten years ago, the idea of being able to play NTSC tapes without investing in expensive multi-system players and TVs seemed like fantasy - how times change!)

Yes you are quite right, I bought a very expensive multi system VCR some years ago, nowadays many offer NTSC playback on Pal tv system. Usually this is noted on the tape slot or in manual.
Incidentally, Classic British film collectors might like to look at Lifeisamovie.com - A collector's dream of movie memorabilia, films, posters, and more they have a great selection of 30's/40's brit films from companies such as Nostalgia Family Video and Sinister Cinema usually priced at only $14.99. The people are extremely friendly and helpful and airmail shipping is reasonable as well. All the tapes are NTSC so check out your VCR but its well worth buying one to take advantage of the great movies on offer!

Nearly all VCRs in the UK can now play NTSC tapes. It's because NTSC is a lower standard than the PAL system that we use (NTSC has fewer lines). So a PAL system can drop its standards a bit and play an NTSC tape. But it's much harder for an NTSC system to be able to raise its standards and play a PAL tape. Multi-standard VCRs do exist in the Americas but they tend to be quite expensive.

Hi Steve

the aforementioned DVD release of "Chin Chu Chow" includes the Emeric Pressburger scripted "Abdul the Damned" (1935) which also stars Fritz Kortzner.

Yes, the chap who did the restoration told me. But it's better that I be told many times than not at all.

Actually we're still not 100% sure of what Emeric's involvement would have been. He was working in the Dramaturgie department at UfA at the time. There he did general script approval and script doctoring on quite a few different films. We have him recorded in the IMDb as doing the 'treatment' of the script, that's a nicely vague description until we can find out any more details.

I've got the DVD on order because I'd also like to see Eric Portman as a Conspiritor

Hi
If you have a VhS machine with NTSC playback you can buy this one from the States and the quality is OK.
I can recommend Lifeisamovie.com - A collector's dream of movie memorabilia, films, posters, and more I have always found them really helpful and shipping charges are much more reasonable than their competitors!
Hope this helps
