Hi all I'm looking for a UK DVD of The Browning version that was made the summer of 1949 I have an old boy who would like to have a copy as he was one of the many extras, he played the part of a school boy and spent about 3 weeks on set.

I have found NTSC DVDs but not UK format

I run a web site of our old school, which has some info regarding this film and others, so he has contacted me to see if I can source one.

It was actually on this afternoon! My recording of it bleedin' well stuffed up! I'm not sure why, but after 37 minutes my PC decided it had captured the entire movie. Technology? Bah!

This is why an old boy phoned me and I ended up watching the whole film on Chn 5 and was prompted with a phone call when he was in shot.

The school most of the boys came from was an approved school, approved by Dr Barnardo’s named The William Baker Technical School, Goldings in Hertfordshire. The cricket scene was shot on location at a public school and took over three weeks to complete so I have been informed. The closing speech took two days!

If you would like to see the photo of Jean Kent with the cricket boys go to www.goldonian.org and click on the memories link, then click on the link for the Goldonian school magazine then look for a link for the browning version, from that you should see hyperlinks for other pages.

from this web site:

One very funny event occurred during the cricket match between staff and boys when Bill Travers, playing the part of the school sports Master who was also supposed to play for England, was taking his turn at bat, facing one of our better Goldings bowlers, Ostle Senior, better known as "Big Oss") They tried several times to have Travers hit a ball bowled by Ostle only to have the embarrassment of being bowled out each time. Finally, they took two shots, one of Oss bowling and then, a separate shot of Travers hitting a ball, which was lobbed to him gently by one of the movie staff. Thanks for all ur input

THE BROWNING VERSION is now out commercially in America, published by The Criterion Collection. If you cannot play American NTSC I have an excellent UK recording. The film is in my Top Ten British movies of all time. I also have an extraordinarily good version of the play with Judi Dench and Ian Holm from BBCtv. Both of them give terrific performances. I would rather forget the Finney version - and the Gielgud version which I saw once at the Museum of Broadcasting in New York. JG was badly miscast, though one could see why he wanted to do the part.

You joke, of course, DB7. But I take your point. Actually there was a Peter Cushing version in 1955, I see!

A superb film and one I regularly watch if I need a pick me up. I always feel Redgrave was at his best playing characters on the point of mental collapse. In this case he is also supported by wonderful performances from Jean Kent and Nigel Patrick. The young actor playing Taplow is also very good. The only false note is struck by Wlifred Hyde White as the headmaster - too smooth and oily. If I remember rightly in his autobiography Redgrave recognised this fault. RHW was cast at the last moment and MR regretted not having the time to adjust his performance. Despite this its in my top ten too!

In the same vein is 'The Years Between'. Never seen it until a showing on Matinee Movies recently, but it was very good with a traumatised Redgrave returning home after the war to find out he had been reported dead. Cue lots of emotional turmoil and stiiff upper lips. In fact its one of the few films I've recorded off Matineee Movies that have been worth keeping.
