Is that a fact?

Has anyone successfully lobbied the BBC to get a rare film shown?

Yes it's a fact. The more knowledgeable may correct me but would the Beeb hold the rights for all time or just for a fixed period?

For things they've made themselves they hold the rights for all time (or 75 years after the death of the primary creators). But for anything made by anyone else, like this film, they would just have screening rights and they would just be for a year or five.

What's our next move ? What is the law on film rights, when one of the share holding companies no longer exists, such as in this case. Maybe we could plant a canister on the sea bed of Stationers' hall with the Britmovie logo in it , and claim that percentage ! Let's march !
Maybe Arthur's daughter has a copy ? If she doesn't, let's make it our task to put one in her hand. I'm sure she would love one. Would she not also make a great ambassador for our cause ?

P.S.
1956 + 75 years = 2031. I shall be 68 before I get to see it, unless we sort this one out !

I've emailed several sites that claim to be able to source any film - at a price!

So, watch this space I suppose....

Ramsbottom was released through British Lion, and here is an email reply that I received yeterday from Mr Peter Snell , current Chairman of British Lion:

Dear Mike,

Please contact Mr. John Herron at Pinewood Studios (01753 651700) in England.
He controls all the physical elements of the old British Lion library which is now owned
by Canal Plus in Paris.

Good Luck.

Peter Snell

Suggest we all ring Mr John Herron and find out!

Best wishes
Mike (MrT)

The current rules (not sure if they're retrospective) are for copyright on films to extend for 70 years from the death of the major creators (director, writer, composer etc).
John Baxter (director & writer) died in 1975
Arthur Askey (writer & performer) died in 1982
But Glenn Melvyn (writer) only died in 1999
So you might have a bit longer to wait

Steve

Just spoke to Pinewood , and they have a negative in 5 cans. BFI suggested we start with the Jack Hilton estate, in tracking down the owners !
I remember Googling Ramsbottom recently, and finding an essay that quoted Ramsbottom. It added that it was an excellent example of British comedy of the time. How did the reviewer see it ! I think it was American. I shall look again.

Let's hope it's worth it if it is found!

However, don't give up hope as I read yesterday that the previous thought lost FORBIDDEN from 1948 is now out on DVD.
