Default The Tales of Hoffman

Hi...I'm looking for The Tales of Hoffman. It's available at Amazon but only in NTSC and I'd much rather have a Pal version. Are there any Brit online outlets similar to Amazon who might have it and could mail order to New Zealand?

My player and Tv handbooks both say that they can handle NTSC to Pal but it would be a real help if anyone who has used NTSC to Pal could let me know
how well that option works and how it effects picture quality. Thanks for any help..Pollyanna.

Tales Of Hoffman was available on VHS in england but it was deleted, blast to blazes!. Now long out of print as you yanks call it, lol, only messin. It simply isn't available in england any more

You might find it on ebay one day if you keep looking. It was a Warner Home Video release and the catalogue number was S038278 if that's any help to you.

Now, if I was a rich english cad, I would have happily hopped across to Oz for a quick sherry. But, I'm not, so I can only wish you the best of british look, and I hope you find Tales Of Hoffman soon :)

I love Powell & Pressburger films, have you seen The 49th Paralell?, very modern for it's day, timeless.

I have got TALES OF HOFFMAN in the British/New Zealand PAL system and can make you a copy. If you are still looking, send an e-mail to

aphralloyd@hotmail.coms - leaving off the final 's' in the address and we can talk further.

Best,

Both Movies Unlimited and CC Video list it as available in NTSC format. But it could be worth asking them to confirm they do have it available.

We're still waiting to hear news about the Criterion DVD which has been on their "coming soon" list for over a year.

Hello again...Thanks for the replies folks...I'll brood on it a bit longer. Can someone give me any idea of what the picture quality is like if I play a ntsc tape through my player and tv which are pal format but can be set to play ntsc.
As you can tell, this is my first brush with the incompatability thing and it would be nice to know a bit more before ordering from half a world away. Cheers...Pollyanna

Playing an NTSC tape on a PAL system is usually fine. It should be just about as good as playing a PAL tape.

Some of the very first VCRs that could do it would only play NTSC tapes in B&W but they didn't usually claim they could play both formats. If the book of words with your VCR says it can do it you're almost certainly OK.

Default Tales of Hoffmann - dying to get hold of..

Can anyone copy this one for me for reasonable price? My fave director (not just Brit. director) Michael Powell, and this is the film of those left to find that I want most!

The UK (PAL format) isn't currently available from retailers but you can get the US (NTSC format) video from places like Amazon.com

We're still waiting for the Criterion DVD but there is an interesting Japanese DVD which has optional Japanese & English subtitles (useful) and cast & crew biographies in Japanese.

Wow, a Japanese DVD, fancy that! I wonder where I would look to most likely find that? Is there a definite intention known of to release the DVD do you know, Steve? Failing these tough options, i'd love to get a nice SP copy of the film...

Just follow the link to http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=KKDS-76 to get the Japanese DVD. I find the English subtitles useful, especially in the third act when Antonia, Crespel & Dr Miracle are all singing at the same time :)

For a basic SP copy of the video go to the Amazon.com link in my previous message - assuming you can play an NTSC format tape.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your tips, unfortunately my video doesn't play the U.S. system tapes as far as I know and over 23 pounds for the DVD is beyond my budget. I WOULD love that SP copy though if at all possible.. until the DVD is released here as Ill Met and SmallBack Room have been..

Check my P&P Films page for details of all the Powell & Pressburger films that we know about on tape, laserdisc, DVD or any other medium.
