I think you may mean THE EDGE OF THE WORLD which was made by Michael Powell. It was about the lives of the people on the island of Foula, but shot on the island of Hirta. It is available on the Critereon DVD label in the US, or extracts from it are on the Critereon DVD of I KNOW WHERE I'M GOING (sorry, i know where i'm going!) If you can play American discs they are your answer. If you merely want a copy of the film in the British PAL system on VHS or DVD-R, I can make one for you.
Best, Aphra

Other way around :)
It was set on "Hirta" (which is part of the St. Kilda group of islands) but filmed on the island of Foula, just west of the main Shetland group.

The American DVD of The Edge of the World is released by Milestone and Image Entertainment. It's available at Amazon.com and probably other retailers.

The British DVD is released by the BFI and is available from Amazon.co.uk, Sendit.com (BlackStar) and probably other retailers.

Both DVDs contain quite a few extras but with some differences in what they each contain. The extras are detailed here.

The British DVD includes the documentary/travelogue St. Kilda - Britain's Loneliest Isle (1928) about the evacuation of St. Kilda.

The evacuation from St Kilda was in August 1930 and you can find out all you need to know (and see in stills) at or via the StKilda Yahoogroup
See it at StKilda : The archipelago at the edge of the world or join it with simple textless email to StKilda-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

It is not a very active group but rather a library. However, enough interesting comes up from time to time

Countryfile on BBC1 this morning had Ben Fogle visiting St. Kilda with one of the surviving evacuees. I've seen that before somewhere, probably in a separate documentary.

There are now regular trips out to St. Kilda. Leave about 8am. Two and a half hours in either direction for the trip. Spend a while on the islands and some time sailing around to see the islands from the sea. Including the towering cliffs and the stacks where all the birds roost. Get back by about 7pm.
See Kilda Cruises
Of course you have to get to Harris before you can start the trip :

Bill Bryden wrote and directed a wonderful drama for BBC2 around 1983 called ILL FARES THE LAND. This is based on the last months of the people who lived on St Kilda before they were evacuated. It contains one of the most appalling and moving moments I have ever seen in television drama when one old man who is not allowed to take his dog with him in the boat, has to shoot it on the quayside. It breaks me up even to think of it.
