Does anyone know if there is a video or dvd copy of this excellent British film starring Robert Donat? If so where can I purchase one from?

Gone to Earth (1950) is often offered on eBay as a DVD. It's offered by sellers in the US & Canada so I presume it's playable in the States. The cover they show is that of the British released DVD so I presume it's a bootleg of that.

Of course I can't condone the making or buying of bootleg copies like this, but as no American distributor has thought fit to release it over there what else is a person to do? :)

I'd be interested to know what the quality is like if anyone did happen to buy one.

As for A Canterbury Tale (1944), the word is that Criterion are looking to add that to their catalogue of fine P&P films on DVD. That and The Forty-Ninth Parallel (1941). I haven't had any definite word from Criterion about this yet, just rumour. But if they do release them I expect they'll be as good as the other P&P films they've released.

But can anyone tell me where I can get a copy in NTSC format, for North American fans?

I can send you a copy in NTSC. As for your long list of other films, I have all of them except for about three, and again can copy into NTSC. However, a number of them is available commerciall, notably THE WICKED LADY, MILLIONS LIKE US, GONE TO EARTH, A CANTERBURY TALE and so on. You might feel like investing in a VHS player that plays PAL! However, I know it is more expensive in North America than here, where practially all VHS machines can play NTSC, a

And I believe you would also need a multi-system TV.

Aphra,

In your wisdom, which VHS and DVD players would you recommend for North Americans to get that play the British VHS/DVDs best?

Best,
Gibbie

My sister is british but lives in the US, she got a region free DVD and PAL/NTSC video both from wallmart, very reasonable cost and no problems playing the PAL stuff i send to her.
Hope that helps.

I don't know about wisdom (!), but where multi-system machines are concerned, I have always gone for Panasonic. They may be a bit more expensive than others, but they were always ahead of the game and they produced the first World Standards Converter for domestic use - now sadly not available. But you could happily take the good Lance's advice and look in on your nearest Walmart. Perhaps he could ask his sister what the make of her recorder is. I think most American DVD players will play our home-made DVD-R discs whatever their region. They may not, however, play commercial PAL DVDs.

Anyway, good luck, Aphra

Thanks, Aphra!

Yes, they do not play the commercial PAL DVDs.

Will look into it.

Ta!

Correct - multi-region DVDs and dual system VHS machines do not convert the signal from say PAL to NTSC, they merely pass the signal on to the TV for that to decode and translate.

Cheers

So, one needs both a dual system DVD/VHS machine and a coverter TV, right?

Is a coverter TV one that keeps itself hidden? :)

My sister has a cheapo standard wallmart tv which she bought about 6 years ago, unless she did it by mistake she definately didnt buy a special converter tv as she is totaly ignorant about PAL/NTSC matters, however i did buy a commercial dvd of wallace and grommit in PAL format and my niece over there watches that everyday.
Perhaps it would be an idea to ask aphra to do you a film in PAL format on a DVD, buy a region free DVD player, hook it up and if it dosnt work take it back , all you will loose is the cost of Aphras movie.Just an idea.
