years ago i saw the movie "libel" starring olivia dehavilland and dirk bogarde. this courtroom drama was filmed in 1959 by m.g.m. studios. i have been unable find any reference to this movie in the career of either olivia or dirk since. why has this movie been so secretive in the united states? is this movie available somewhere? i would like to see this film again but i cannot locate it anywhere. any suggestions? thanks. hammer

    Hello, Hammer,

Dirk Bogarde stole the show in "Libel" for his superb performance as the barrister et al, not wanting to ruin the suspense for you. It is a highly regarded work by Sir Dirk, is often discussed by our members, and is included in his filmography at www.imdb.com, as well as biographies on him and in Sir Dirk's several best-selling autobiographies. It is oop, but copies often pop up at Ebay, so do watch there for one. I highly recommend it. Sir Sir deserved an Oscar for it, but the film won only for sound. The Academy can show incredible lack of taste at times.

If you enjoy Dirk Bogarde's performances, please do join us at the Dirk_Bogarde_Brigade, which I moderate. (The Bogarde Brigade is the list branch of The Dirk Bogarde page set up by "Alpheraz" mentioned in a post above.)

We are a cordial group of Bogarde fans who enjoy discussing his performances and books.

    All the best,

Does anyone have this film to trade? I recall Dirk giving this amazing courtroom address, a very early example of his phenomenal acting ability.

    Hi, boyblue and tozzer56:

Try Ebay (as Bats says) and also ioffer.com, which has several sellers offering "Libel", inc. ones in the UK with no or minimal s/h.

Great film, worth tracking down. Dirk's portrayal of several men, plus his courtroom performance, are superb.

    Hi, Judylou:

    Much agree!

If you haven't seen it, here's a brief clip from Libel (1959) up at YouTube. As one person commented: "It is absolutely galling to only have this small clip of film. I have been waiting to see it again ever since it first appeared. It was a very clever and intriguing plot that kept people guessing until the end, which I have forgotten. I would love to see the whole film once more but for some inexplicable reason it isn't available on video or DVD."

I have it (copy'd from TV) if i didn't finalise the disc i can copy it back onto my hard drive and then onto a dvd-r for you, i'd need to check as some i finalised (which means i cant copy it) and some i didn't, if you have the means to copy i'm quite happy to post it to you, just return when you've copy'd it (or just watched it) let me know, good film as is "Victim"

Just looked it up and sods law!! i finalised it, however offer stands,
