I'm searching for a copy of BLACKMAILED (1951) with Dirk Bogarde and Mai
Zetterling. Or any information about its possible airing on TV. As far as I know, it was never released commercially, but it may have been shown on TV. Did anyone copy it, or does anyone remember seeing it on TV?
Anything you can tell me would be a big help to my information on the film.
Happy to pay all costs or trade, your choice. Please send me a PM?
Thanks,
Barbara
It was certainly released if that helps

Hi, Captain Waggett,
Many thanks for the news clipping.I always find that bit of history fascinating and valuable. My apologies for not being clear about "commercially released" for cinemas. I should have said that I don't think BLACKMAILED was released on vhs or other format which the public could buy in addition to seeing it in their local movie house.
I'm hoping it's possible that it was aired on tv and someone copied it.
Best,
Barbara
Just a bump in case someone in Britmovieland has a copy of this one. Plenty of film and TV to trade, if interested please PM me. Thanks :)

Many thanks for the bump, Harbottle.I've been chasing Blackmailed for years. It was shown theatrically but never made available on vhs or dvd. Critics at the time didn't think highly of it although Bogarde probably gave it his all; yet, I'd like to see it.
I've heard one report that it was shown on TV, but no copy has ever surfaced. I am hoping that there is one complete set of reels out there waiting to be discovered. This may be the day.

Barbara

Strange how a film starring those two leads can have vanished pretty much without trace! There are no comments about it at IMDB which is certainly not a good indicator that copies are 'out there' among collectors
Lets keep hoping :)
As far as I can remember, Blackmailed has never been shown on television in the UK.
This was shown way back in the mid 1980's on Channel 4 and was (if I am correct ) Distributed by a company called Bell Pictures because I remember seeing it long ago.

Hi, Amethyst_Isle:
Someone else thought they'd seen it on TV also, but following up through the Channel, etc. never produced any results about the film or acquiring it. Fingers crossed, a BritMovie member may have recorded it on vhs back then.
Thanks for the input. It gives one hope.
Barbara
Don't get too excited Dirk fans but at another forum I read that VCI are looking into releasing this oneNow whether they have actually found a copy I can't say.
Dear Harbottle and Barbara,
I can here the cheers if VCI did release Blackmail, of all the people who have been asking for this film over the years. I for one would be on the internet ordering a copy as soon as possible, after I had got over the shock of the news of it's release![]()

Hi, Amethyst_Isle:
Thanks very much for saying you've seen it on TV.Another person reported that to me also. That means that perhaps someone had the professional equipment back then to record it off TV. I've discussed this with Darrenburnfan who as a former film projectionist had a good deal of experience in film, which type could/could not be recorded over, recording equipment, etc. One problem seems to be the lack of recording equipment in an average home to have recorded it off TV in 1950.
The next is where the original film reels shown in theatres might be. As Darrenb noted when I worried that they'd been recorded over, not the case for that type of film. Even so, given the poor reviews of the film, who would have kept the reels? Not the studios. If they didn't bother to properly care for a film like 'A Star is Born', my thought is they could care less about a 1950 film like 'Blackmailed'. So worse scenario, the reels were tossed in the dustbin.
We always thought that the best hope existed in a private collector having the reels. One informant of mine reported he had heard that an avid film collector in Europe had the reels, but no more came of it.
If Don Blair with his contacts can unearth the film, kudos to him and cheers from all Bogarde fans. The film reportedly is not great, but being the avid completists most DB fans are, we are driven to see it. Then we can toss it and lay it to rest.
All best,
Barbara

Buy it, own it, watch it, toss it, and lay it to rest. My thoughts exactly Barbara. Even if it is awful, knowing Blackmail is out there somewhere makes us want to own it.![]()
