Well the gaffer walked past just before, so I'd had to do some work instead of typing an instantaneous response...

By coincidence, I was reading about this very film last night. Apparently, Daphne Du Maurier (who wrote the book and co-produced the film) overturned MGM's wish to cast Cary Grant in the main double role. She went on to form a friendship with Alec Guinness, although his relationship with co-star Bette Davis was difficult. Robert Hamer had personal problems during the shoot, which meant Guinness had to play a role in directing the film.

Regards
Phil Turner
