Does anyone have this 1948 film with Rex Harrison, based on a John Galsworthy play? Not to be confused with the 1940 US film with Norma Shearer. Thanks!

ESCAPE is now a totally ''lost" film. The BFI do not even have a copy in the archive and a recent appeal by Alan Howden, ex BBC head of film buying, in THE VETERAN, the magazine of Film and TV veterans, did not elicit any response. He had hoped that somewhere, somebody who had once worked on the fim might have a print squirreled away. But No.

There's a link to the various Amazon sites. But if you follow them you'll see that most are offering searches for a book of that title and the one that offers a search for a video or DVD (Amazon.com) doesn't offer any.

This isn't a lost film at all, but the only known print (which was the director's copy) is at MOMA in New York.

How can a film made by an American co in 1948, starring a major actor and directed by a top director be nearly lost, especially as minor studios Bs from the thirties are freely available?



It doesn't make sense; Are there other examples like this?

My father tells me it was transmitted by one of the UK tv stations, (cant remember which one) around 1985 but he also thought it was aired by one of the Astra satellite (Sky, TCM? etc) channels in the mid 90's. He thought it was so awfull that no one ever bothered to record it, after all...he was in it!

Peter Burdon, an actor from the West of England Theatre Company based in Exmouth, he played a bit role as a farmer from whom Rex H had stolen clothes on a washing line, as the farmer tried to chase Harrison off an errant pig runs infront and trips him over letting Rex H get away. A bit slapstick I guess, my Dad said he hat to re-take the scene several times due to timing and by the end the pig was getting snappy. Can I give a web link here for his web site?
