I too have a direct off air recording from Channel 4 back in 1994.

I've just watched this as a part of my research for my Peter Dyneley article for FAB the Gerry Anderson Appreciation Society magazine. The article has grown so large that it's going to be spread over two issues (2500 words just to reach the early sixties) and I am now, for what it's worth, probably the UK's formost expert on the Japanese/American horror movie The Manster!

One interesting point (to me, at least) was that the central idea behind House of Mystery, which I won't reveal here for those who haven't seen it, is remarkably similar to that of the 1980 Hammer House of Horror episode The Silent Scream.

It's based on the Grand Guignol play L’Angoise and HoM was perhaps Sewell's fourth version of the story.

I believe it was done 5 times in total by Sewell.

I've seen three. Always told in flashback and involve a couple entering a decrepit cottage, boat or art studio, then a medium enters the fray to reveal the troubled history.

I'm quoting from Phil Hardy's Aurum Encyclopaedia of Horror allthough he doesn't give the five titles, only three, HOM. Ghost Ship and The Medium.

Latin Quarter would make it four.

The fifth........?

Default 'House Of Mystery' (1961)

Has anyone a copy of this genuinely spooky chiller from '61?
I remember watching it quite some time ago-and remember it having an all pervasing feel of unease. With Nannette Newman in female lead and a sinister older Woman.
