Anyone got this to DVD?

Can't understand the BBC's attitude to this superb comedy.

Cheers!

Apologies for bumping a prehistoric thread up to the top, but it seemed more logical than starting a new one on the same subject.

I last seen it on terrestrial TV in 1991 when an extended episode was shown as a tribute to Ralph Bates following his death (this was in the days before I also came to associate him with the Hammer movies).

I was lucky enough to catch most episodes on UK Gold during the 90's, but like the original poster, have always been mystified as to why it simply seemed to dissapear. I scan the DVD racks at my local stores every week in the hope that I will someday see see it listed.

I loved that series. It's a cliche I know, but I really did know people who I could associate with each and every one of the characters.

Although I can't now remember the title, for me the best episode had to be the one which featured Kevin Lloyd as the new group member and had Freddie Garrity & The Dreamers appearing as themselves.

Least said, in my opinion, about the US series the better.

Having got the series (cheers, Doc) it still stands the test of time and, along with Just Good Friends, is John Sullivans best work.

I can only assume it's John Sullivan holding up the release on DVD of both Dear John and Just Good Friends series 3.

Why on earth the BBC released series 1 and 2 of JGF but not the final series is beyond belief.

Anyone shed any light, or do I have to keep watching my pretty bad VHS rips

I did buy the big box VHS release from a few years ago, but it was badly edited. This doesn't seem to have ben anything to do with music rights, as most of the scenes with music in them have actually been left in. The same is also true of the JGF box set.

I later found out (on this site, actually) that the Comic Strip box set had been edited by Peter Richardson himself, as he believed his early work to be 'substandard'..maybe Sullivan has done the same thing? The scene where John and Kate go to bed together has been badly edited since the repeat in 1987, however, as "they" (for which read 'self appointed moral guardians') didn't want to be seen to encourage promiscuity at the height of the AIDS epidemic.

Most DVDs and videos released by Playback these days eeem dreadfully edited.. THE DUCHESS OF DUKE STREET suffering the most abominably with whole segments of plot missing!! Anyone who's got copies uncut from the 80s of any of the above mentioned series is quite welcome to drop me a line!!

I have sent you a PM Blancbleu

Please note anybody wanting a copy of series 1 and 2 of Dear John must have something to trade that I want and I will only sell as a last resort and if that upsets some people - so be it!
Merry Christmas
Doc
