I'm trying to find out what the music is that was used as the theme to a series of readings of The Wind in the Willows that was shown on UK TV back in the 1970s. It's English pastoral and features a background of strings with an oboe or clarinet taking the solo. It isn't Ralph Vaughan Williams' Oboe Concerto, but it does have similarities with other English music from the early part of the Twentietch Century.
It was also used in the more recent BBC Bookmark programme on Kenneth Grahame from the late 90s.
This music has been haunting me for over 30 years, and I'd love to know what it is.

Nick

Did anyone catch the re-run of An Awfully Big Adventure on BBC Four yesterday? It was about Kenneth Grahame. I'm desperate to know what the music is that was used for the opening and closing credits as it has been haunting me for more than 30 years.

Any ideas?

I'm intrigued. Give me a shout next time they repeat this programme please!

I'm not sure, but I think the music you're alluding to might be a piece called "The watermill" by Ronald Binge. There's a sample available here:

Amazon.com: Sailing By: The Music of Ronald Binge: Music: Ronald Binge,Charles Gerhardt,Heinz Hotter,Ronald Binge,Walter Heller,National Philharmonic Orchestra,South German Radio Orchestra,Süddeutschen Rundfunkorchester,Walter Heller Orchestra

which might help you decide....

Yes, that's it! I would never have found that without your help as i've never heard of Ronald Binge before. I shall have to do some digging.

Many thanks

But I have come across his work without realising it. Sailing By can be heard every day of the year on Radio 4.

You're very welcome; 'haunting' is the perfect word. I first heard the music when it was used in a television adaptation of 'The secret garden' - and that was probably about thirty years ago, too......

That's a double CD. Track 2 on CD 1 is called "The Watermill - Sailing By"
But it's track 1 on CD 2, just called "Sailing By" which is used as part of the close down sequence every night on Radio 4. That and the shipping forecast.
