I would say 'essential' for the films you mention.
But have you considered The Duellists? Those factors are quintessential in that, and do not in any way interfere with a stunning film. All of the parts work together beautifully.
This is research for part of my A level. I'm doing Ridley scott in case you havn't noticed anyway set design seems to be quint essential in his films wondered I'm concentrating on BLade runner, Gladiator and Alien. Anyway does sometimes the fact he concentrates soo much on the frame affect the actors ability to perform sometimes![]()

Totally Agree with TimR's Reply.................as for Alien the Creature was created by H. R. Giger (as Im sure you are aware) a Swiss surrealist painter, sculptor, and set designer........
I Think the lighting in the film was perfectly suited to show the Alien in its most menacing state' the strobe lighting and short Camera shots were perfect IMHO......
But what do I know.......
I read some time ago that Ridley Scott was advised not too shoot the Duellists in the Autumn (due to poor lighting and early Nights) but he insisted as it was the Perfect lighting for the Mood.....
in which case I think he got it spot on.........
Good luck with the A Level Jojostar..........![]()
